He was born and raised in Texas, spending most of his childhood in Austin, Texas, and moving to Houston in the 1970s. From an early age, he loved cars and car racing. This love led him to establish lifelong careers centered around the automotive and tool industries, and he could be found spending his weekends watching or attending car races, as well.
Wally was best known for being a storyteller. He loved to recount past life experiences, a good joke, or a fun fact to anyone who would listen. All the stories reflected the varied chapters Wally lived through during his 72 years of life, but overall, he just loved to laugh. He never missed an opportunity for a joke, a comment, or recommending a funny cartoon or movie. He would often send funny comics to family and friends. Many of these stories were about the pets he loved, as he never considered a home complete without at least one dog, and sometimes a cat, to spoil with treats.
Wally was also an avid reader and loved music, attending concerts and musical theater whenever possible. He spent many years as part of a choir or praise band, and he made sure to pass on his appreciation for all genres of music to his kids – mainly through controlling the radio station in the car on long family road trips. For many years, he especially loved to sing at church. He was a member at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church for over 30 years and attended virtually when he was no longer able to attend in person.
In addition to music, he shared his love of sports with his family and friends, particularly the Astros, and later in life, became a Shareholder of the Green Bay Packers – attending many game-watching days with fellow Cheeseheads. Mostly, he loved the camaraderie of fellow game watchers and a chance to connect through shared interests.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Waldo B. Newcomb Jr. in 1970, Floella Locke Newcomb Tarantola in 2010, and his Son, Jeremy Newcomb, in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Nola Newcomb, and his daughter, Jessica Newcomb.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in his name to the American Heart Association. Wally was a heart patient for over 30 years, and the advances in medical technologies kept him with us for many years after his first heart attack in 1990.
You may alternatively consider donating in his name to Citizens for Animal Protection at 17555 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77094, where the Newcomb family has adopted pets for the past 25 years.
A Celebration of Life for Wally will be held on January 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, 221111 Morton Ranch, Katy, Texas 77449, in the Main Sanctuary.
