1929-2021
Wava Lee (Caddenhead) Fick was born on November 16, 1929, in De Kalb, Texas and
passed away on August 8, 2021, in Houston, TX. She grew up in New Boston, Bowie
County, TX. Her parents were Luther Harvey Caddenhead and Zula Marie Qualls. Wava
graduated from New Boston High School in 1947 and then attended Lon Morris College
in Jacksonville, TX, where she met the love of her life, Carl Leroy Fick. She graduated
from the University of Texas in 1954 with a degree in English.
In 1956 the family moved to Houston, where Carl spent his career with Brown & Root
and Wava spent most of her years rearing their seven children. For 13 happy years,
Wava worked as the Houston Southwest District Secretary for the United Methodist
Church, retiring in 1993.
Wava’s husband, Carl, predeceased her in 2017 after 64 years of marriage. She is
survived by her 7 children: Dale Campbell (Ted), Gloria Williams (Olin), Melissa
Kamerbeek (Marty), Carl Milton Fick (Diane), Leah Tzimourakas (Kostas), Jana McVey
(Glenn), and Randall Fick (Divya), plus 22 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
In Houston, Wava and her family were members of Beneke United Methodist Church,
and later Westbury UMC, where she was a member for 58 years. She served in many
leadership positions at the church, including the delivery of a fresh loaf of homemade
bread to every first-time visitor to Westbury United Methodist Church for 30+ years.
Wava was also honored with the Lon Morris College “Distinguished Alumni Award” in
1994.
Wava’s great passions were her Lord, her family, and her church. She loved to cook,
read, work crossword puzzles, and write poetry. Wava was a wonderful mother, who
oversaw a very busy household. She was an exceptional cook and was greatly loved by
all her children, grandchildren, and friends.
The family is grateful to Carol Long, and her daughter Kadisha, for providing loving,
in-home care to Wava for the last 3½ years.
Wava’s burial service was held on August 11 at Dignity Forest Park Cemetery in Houston.
