Jerry was born April 23, 1932 to Wendell and Helene Toomey in Canandaigua, N.Y. Following graduation from Canandaigua Academy in 1950 he entered the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jerry went to work for Ingersoll-Rand after graduation until his retirement in 1995. His career began in NY and took him to Richmond, Virginia and to Houston, Texas.
Jerry met the love of his life, Margaret, right after his graduation from Notre Dame. They were married in 1957 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Not only husband and wife, they were the best of friends. They created many wonderful memories during their 60 years together with their family and their friends. They traveled quite often—with their children taking them on cross country trips when they were young; many trips with friends and trips together to some of our world’s greatest spots.
“Give back” was Jerry’s motto. With the Notre Dame club, he was an active mentor for many years to school children, following them during their school careers. During tax season Jerry used his financial skills to help prepare taxes with a group of Notre Dame alumni. He was active in many of the organizations at his church, St. John Vianney Catholic Church. They were founding members of the parish and Jerry served on the Parish Council many times. Together, Jerry & Margaret ran the Marriage preparation for young couples. They ran many events for the church bazaar in its early years and he was active in the Men’s Club. He was on the parish mission team traveling and working at the border with fellow parishioners to help families in need there. He helped at the food pantry and took food to the sister parish of St. John Vianney.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter Ann Turner and her husband, Greg; his son, Michael and his wife, Liz; and his son, Peter and his wife, Cammie. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 in-law grandchildren; Matt & Surrella Turner; Alan Turner; Patty & Guillermo Sahagun; Bobby Turner; Stephen Toomey; Katie Toomey; Kyle & Kelsey Toomey; and Claire & Mark Drake. He is survived by his 6 great-grandchildren; Guille, Sofia & Isabella Sahagun; Emmie Turner; and Maggie & Luke Toomey. Jerry is also survived by his sister, Mary Barone of Webster, New York.
Serving as pallbearers are Matthew Turner, Alan Turner, Patty Sahagun, Kyle Toomey, Bobby Turner, Claire Drake, Stephen Toomey and Katie Toomey.
