Bill was born on February 16, 1935 in McPherson, Kansas to Harvey H. Hood and Violet Harting Hood. He graduated from Borger High School in Texas in 1953 and attended Frank Phillips Junior College in Borger, TX from 1953 to 1956. He also attended Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Geology in 1959. He served in the United States Army at Fort Ord, CA from 1959 – 1960 and further served in the United States Army National Guard achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant from 1960 – 1969.
Bill was married to Nancy Edna Routon from 1962 – 1988 and they had two children, Andrea and Scott.
He married Judy Birdsong in 1995 and they have remained married since.
Bill worked a majority of his life in the oil and gas business for JM Huber Corp. He began in 1960 working on drilling rigs and later moved to Houston, TX in 1969 where he became a Senior Purchasing Agent. He retired from JM Huber in 1999.
In his earlier years Bill enjoyed participating in the Borger area Kiwanis Club as their chapter President.
Throughout his life Bill was very involved in sports and thoroughly enjoyed helping less fortunate children participate in sporting activities. Bill played and coached baseball from pony league to Semi-Pro in Borger, TX and after moving to Houston, TX he coached teams in football and predominately baseball. He was well known in the Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association (SBMSA) as a coach, commissioner, and friend and was even better well known for paying registration fees and buying equipment and uniforms for kids who could not afford it. His generosity included his time which he sacrificed in order to help kids of all ages learn the fundamentals and providing expert coaching of baseball.
His primary joy in life was spending time with his extensive family. He loved spending time with his wife, children, and grand-children and was always devoted to their happiness and well-being.
William is preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Jean Hood in 1934, his father H.H. Hood in 1975, and his mother Violet Hood in 1995. He is survived by his brother James Robert Hood of Norman, OK whose children are Leesa Lanae Hood of Dallas, TX and Robert McClellan Hood of Oklahoma. Bill is further survived by his daughter Andrea Hood Miles and her husband Donald Allen Miles of Lancaster, CA, along his son Scott Kyler Hood and his wife Kazumi Hood of Cypress, TX. Further, Bill is survived by his wife Judy Birdsong Hood of Houston, TX and Judy’s children Michelle Benard and her husband Demitrius of Houston, TX; Richard Mitchell and his fiancé Lori Spann of Magnolia, TX; and Rachel Hewlett and her husband Mark of Houston, TX. Bill had numerous grandchildren who are Kelcie Sylvester, Emily Hood, Aylie Hood, Bailey Mitchell, Kollin Sylvester, Ashlyn Miles, Taylor Hewlett, Lauren Miles, Kylie Sylvester, Austin Hewlett, Hannah Mitchell, Hunter Mitchell, Nicholas Miles, Ryan Miles, and Logan Miles. Bill was also blessed with a great-grandson Kaden Sylvester.
Bill also leaves behind many other friends and family too numerous to mention as it would fill pages. He touched the hearts of so many people throughout his lifetime and many are those who have experienced his love and friendship over the years.
