November 3, 1942 – February 19, 2026
William Lynn Lester, known affectionately to family and friends as Billy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 83. A man of warmth, sharp wit, and unwavering devotion to his family, Billy will be remembered for his kind heart and the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.
Billy was born on November 3, 1942, in Beaumont, Texas, to William Eugene Lester and Alphia Wingfield Lester. His family relocated to Houston when he was young, and he spent his formative years in the city that would remain close to his heart throughout his life. Billy grew up surrounded by a deep love of Texas traditions, absorbing his parents' passionate devotion to Texas A&M University. His father was a graduate of the Class of 1939, and a dedicated supporter who never missed a home football game at Kyle Field for over fifty years.
Billy attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. As a young man, he developed a love of sports and became a passionate follower of various professional leagues. He was a devoted follower of Houston's professional sports teams, the Astros, Rockets, Oilers and eventually Texans, and rarely missed an opportunity to attend games and cheer them on in person. His enthusiasm for the Texas Longhorns was intense, but he maintained a soft spot for the Texas A&M Aggies in honor of his parents' deep-rooted devotion to that institution. Billy also had a lifelong love of cards and gaming, with a particular fondness for poker, a passion that would eventually shape his professional life.
Billy built a career in the gaming industry in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he resided for over thirty-five years and held numerous positions in the field. His time in Las Vegas was marked by professional accomplishment and the many friendships he cultivated along the way.
Recently, Billy relocated from Las Vegas to Houston to be closer to his family and grandchildren, a decision that brought him immense joy. He treasured the time spent with his loved ones and delighted in watching his grandchildren grow.
Billy was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William Eugene Lester and Alphia Wingfield Lester, both of Houston. He is survived by his longtime companion and partner, Whidden Young; his son, Mark Lynn Lester, and Mark's wife, Elizabeth, of Houston; and by his two grandchildren, William Lester and Elinor Lester, who were the light of his later years. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra McBride and her husband Jim of Houston; his nieces and nephews, including Tracy Dillee McCleary and husband Ryan, Jason Dillee and wife Sally, Lisa Neuman and husband Greg, and Sean McBride and wife Jeaneth; as well as numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Billy Lester was a loving father, a proud grandfather, a devoted brother, and a loyal friend. His sharp wit, kind spirit, and generous heart left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service celebrating Billy’s life will be held at a later date in Houston, Texas. Details will be announced to family and friends when arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Billy’s memory are encouraged to make donations to the charity of their choice.
