

William Loyd Hurst, age 65, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at his home in Missouri City, Texas. Loyd was born to Harold and Marguerite Hurst on June 24, 1949 in Dallas, Texas. Before earning his undergraduate degree, Loyd enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he trained as a medic and fought in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. After his honorable discharge from military service, Loyd earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Houston. After his father’s death, he served for many years as the President of Hurst Engraving Company in Houston. Most recently, Loyd retired as Vice President of Finance and Accounting for Signet Maritime Corporation.
At the time of his death, Loyd was serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of First United Methodist Church, Houston, where he was also actively involved in the Logos Sunday School Class and as a Stephen Minister.
A devoted husband and father, Loyd is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dawn; his mother, Marguerite Hurst; his sister, Cherylee Sandlin, and her husband, Richard; his sister, Beverly Boling, and her husband, Richard. He is also survived by his daughter, Shayne Hurst Newell, and her husband, David; his two grandsons, Peter and Jacob Newell; his sister-in-law, Corinne Lock, and her husband, Richard Hulbert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Loyd was preceded in death by his father, Harold Loyd Hurst, and his niece, Lisa Goad.
St. Francis of Assisi is often quoted as saying "Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words when necessary.” Loyd lived his life according to this simple maxim every day. Loyd will be missed by all who knew him and will be remembered for his generous spirit and his big-hearted laugh.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Loyd’s memory to First United Methodist Church, Houston.
