OBITUARY

William "Bill" Edwin McCollum, Jr.

August 25, 1945September 7, 2020

After a sudden onset of heart issues, William “Bill” Edwin McCollum Jr. passed away on September 7, 2020 with his wife by his side.

Bill was born in Mattoon, Illinois on August 25, 1945 to William Edwin McCollum Sr. and Mary Ellen Music. He graduated from Mattoon High School in 1963. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corp from 1963-1967 serving in The Vietnam War.

Upon returning home, he found the love of his life, Carol Nevins, at the Dog N Suds restaurant where their love instantly flourished into the sounds of wedding bells. In June 1968, they were blessed with the birth of their twin sons.

Bill held many jobs, but he was the most proud when wearing the badge as an officer of law-enforcement both in Illinois and Texas.

Bill’s absolute favorite hobby of all time was fishing. He spent many years on the water with his wife and sons whether it was for leisure or for a tournament.

Bill and Carol’s dream was to live at the lake, which they made come true in 2015 in Milam, Texas. Many memories were made there with family and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James McCollum and his sister, Virginia Ryan Roy. He is survived by his wife Carol and his two sons: Robert H. McCollum and wife Denice of Alachua, Florida, Chad McCollum and wife Michele of Spring Texas. Bill was also survived by his brother Robert L. McCollum of Hemphill, Texas and his sister Mary Lou Matthews of Mattoon, Illinois. He is survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bill can be remembered for his humor and always joking around and will be deeply missed by everyone who has ever known or loved him.

The family has requested, that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Southeast Texas Patriot Guard Riders at http://setexaspgr.org/donate.html

Well the boat is full ....My dad ...Uncle Jim and now Uncle Bill...cast your line and wait for the Big One .... ...My thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Carol and Chad and Bobby and their families ...

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Bill and I were not so close, since I was 10 years older. He was always my little brother. I remember rocking him when he was a baby, and being his babysitter! But time flies and little brothers grow up,. Bill loved to joke and fish , I want to remember him with a big smile on his face and a fishing pole in his hand! He loved his family and was very proud of them! Wish we lived closer, but know we are thinking of you all and sending our love!

I remember Billy slightly when we would visit Granny McCollum, Aunt Georgia, Toq and Raelyne in Mattoon. We always had a mini family get together which kept us in touch with the cousins. Have always hoped we would be able to get together again.

Carol, I remember Billy, as I called him, coming by our house on the way home from high school to say hello to Granny McCollum. I have fond memories
of his tolerance of a grade schooler. Prayers for you and your children. Love, Toqualee McCollum Lawrence
