Bill was born in Brooklyn, New York to parents, William J. Murphy and Marguerite Murphy. He graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia and was a Certified Public Accountant and later graduated law school at South Texas College of Law and served as Tax Counsel for Exxon-Mobil.
Bill had nearly 35 years of service with Exxon-Mobil and joined the company in October 1980. After spending the first 10 years of his career in various Controller’s positions, Bill joined the Tax Department. He spent the majority of his time in Tax supporting Exploration opportunities around the world and served most recently as Tax Counsel, Downstream & Chemical Tax after completing an assignment in Moscow as Russia Exploration Tax Manager.
At ExxonMobil, Bill excelled in a wide variety of financial, accounting, internal audit, information technology, corporate structure planning and international tax assignments, both in the U.S. and with the company's challenging projects in Russia, South America, Africa and the Far East. Bill’s work experience even journeyed as far as above the Arctic Circle. He was widely appreciated as a creative and brilliant colleague.
Bill lived larger than life and spread joy and happiness to everyone he met.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Bill loved a good prank (on someone else) as much as an evening out with his colleagues and many friends.
Bill was a loving husband to Martha and adored his daughter, Amanda. Bill Murphy leaves many family members and friends grieving over his untimely passing, notably: Martha, his loving wife; his daughter Amanda of whom he was so proud and his brother, Robert Murphy of Bel Air, MD, and his beloved bulldog, Daisy.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 1st of October 2015, in the Jasek Chapel and Parlor of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Mass of Christian Burial is to be celebrated at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 2nd of October 2015, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Road in Houston.
Bill lived his life joyously. His passing has left those fortunate to have known him with a keen sense of loss but forever holding cherished memories.
