When Glen moved in as our next door neighbor last year I was a bit apprehensive, having had an unfortunate experience with our previous neighbor. But, while Glen was moving in, I immediately noticed the MAGA stickers on his SUV. I couldn’t wait to tell my wife that I’m going to get along fine with our new neighbor.
I only wish I would have had an opportunity to
meet Glen earlier as we had several spirited conversations about politics. He supported my run for Fulshear  city council last year and was glad to hear I was running again this year.
Just this morning, I went out to pick up the Houston Chronicle newspaper in Glen’s driveway.  I found a shiny new penny laying “heads up” next to the newspaper. 
With Glen loving his morning paper and being a financial man, I think he sent me a sign that he was fine.

I knew Glen for more than 18 years and had the privilege of working for him for over 10. He was the kind of boss who always stood up for you and genuinely took care of his people. To me, he was far more than just a boss. So much has changed in my life over the last 18 years, yet through it all, Glen remained a steady presence, always ready to listen, always a true friend to me.

Glen was a man of routine. For the first ten years I knew him, every Friday without fail, he went to Escalante’s after work. In his later years, it became Steak 48. I joined him there on serveral occasions and I know so many people that knew Glen did as well. He loved his work and was dedicated to it. He usually came to the office every morning at 6:30AM, rarely missing a day, and during all the years I worked with him, he was in the office almost every Saturday for at least half day. He took pride in his work. Most of all, he loved the people he worked with.

After Glen retired, we stayed in touch, talked often and met whenever we could. Our conversations always returned to the people we had worked with and the good old days we shared. Glen had a ranch near Yoakum, and while he thought he would spend much of his retirement there, he soon realized he was still very much a city man.

My son Ian loved Glen. On Saturdays when I needed to catch up on work, I would bring Ian to the office, and he would happily run back and forth between my office and Glen’s. Ian is now 14 years old, and every Christmas since he was born, Glen never failed to give him a gift and a card. I received the same, along with a black calendar notebook every year — a tradition I will always cherish.

I will be forever grateful for the time, memories, and friendship we shared with Glen. He will always hold a special place in my heart. Until we meet again.

I worked for Glen for 7 years and known him for more than 13 years. He was more than a boss to me; he was a kind mentor and my best friend beyond work. He always supported me, not only in my career but in life. Almost every day on my way home, I would call him, and we would talk about work, life, worries, and hopes. No matter how busy he was, he always listened—with patience, understanding, and genuine care. His kindness, wisdom, and presence made a lasting difference in my life. I will always be grateful for the time we shared and for the way he showed up for me and so many others.
