Zelma McClendon Scales, daughter of the late Tessie Bagley and Homer McClendon Sr., was born August 3, 1936 in Baytown, Texas. Her parents later moved to Mt. Enterprise, Texas where Zelma spent most of her youth. Zelma’s teenage years were spent in Southeast Texas while attending high school.
She married Marshall Scales in Houston, TX. She opened a salon and became a successful hairdresser. Their union produced seven children. She is remembered as a devoted mother. Mostly, she was soft spoken and loving until she saw her children misbehave then she was stern and spirited.
Zelma attended Fifth Ward Church of Christ until her health failed.
Zelma Scales departed this life on March 23, 2021. She is preceded by her parents, Tessie and Homer McClendon Sr; her siblings, James McClendon, Homer McClendon Jr., Artillia White, Geraldine Smith, and Inez Griffin; her children, Marshall Scales Jr. and Cassandra Scales and her grandson, Raychard Scales.
She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Sally Coleman, Raymond (Arlene) McClendon, and David (Liz) Bell; her children, Anita Jones, Crystal (Anthony Sr.) Darden, Marsha Fuller, Carmen Mitchell, and Tonya (Robert Sr.) Hamilton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and relatives.
