Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1937, he emigrated with his family to Canada in 1953.
In Edmonton, Alberta, Alfie served in the Canadian Army Reserve. Having been impressed by his contact with the 82nd Airborne while a child in Portrush during WWII, he devoted himself to military service, quickly rising in rank.
Living in Edmonton, he met his future wife, Jackie. His son, Roger, and daughter, Suzi, were born in Canada before Alfie and Jackie left for their new life in California where their third child, Tara, was born.
Even after moving to California, Alfie was devoted to his family in Canada. They would visit every year so he could help his father at the house. His mother and little sister, Gail, looked forward to these times.
Alfie loved to camp. Some of his favorite places were Patrick's Point, Woodward Reservoir, Pismo Beach, Big Trees, and McSwain Reservoir. Being in nature surrounded by his family was one of his favorite things. He never stopped planning all the fun adventures they would have together. When visiting his family in Canada, he enjoyed camping there as well in the Kootenays and in Jasper and Banff National Parks.
When at home, Alfie loved to show off his skill on the barbeque and swim with his family. One of his favorite activities was teaching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild how to swim.
Disneyland was a tradition that began in the sixties. He later decided that Pirates of the Caribbean would be the first ride that everyone rode as a family and everyone had to sing along! In the seventies, Jackie and Alfie decided to start Ferguson Family Daycare which operates until this day. Alfie was devoted to the wellbeing of the children under his care and each one was like extended family to him.
Alfie was predeceased by his loving wife, Jackie, his parents, Alfred and Elsie, and his sisters, Mary and Patsy. He is survived by his son Roger (Lydia) Ferguson of Fresno, his daughter Suzi (Jim) Calvillo of Modesto, and his daughter Tara Weber of Modesto. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert
Ferguson, Andrew Ferguson, Bryan Weber, Hannah Weber, Jimmy Calvillo, and his great grandson, Elijah (Baby E). He is survived also by his brother Thomas (Marilyn) Ferguson of Nova Scotia and his sister Gail (Ed) Smith of Modesto.
