Alice N. Stroud, namesake of Alice N. Stroud Elementary School in the Empire Union School District, passed away in Modesto, CA following a long illness. Alice Nadine Dorrel was born in Oyer, St. Clair County, Missouri on November 9, 1926. She was the daughter of Landy Russell and Pansy Leona (Dains) Dorrel, She attended school in Lone Jack, MO, graduating from Lone Jack High School in 1944. She attended Western Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, MO for 2 years before moving in 1946 to Waterford, CA to join her parents.
Her first teaching job began in the fall of 1946 at Empire Elementary School. Alice completed her Bachelor's degree and Teaching Credential through classes offered at Modesto Junior College by San Francisco State College following World War II. She taught several primary grades, was an active member of the Empire Teachers Association, served as a mentor and supervising teacher and was a Miller-Unruh reading specialist. Alice retired from the Empire Union School District in 1987. She was an avid reader and loved cooking and hosting family events. Following retirement, she volunteered at the McHenry Museum, LARC (Ladies Aid for Retarded Children) Thrift Shop and enjoyed the hobbies of flower gardening, golf, bridge and world travel.
Alice met her future husband outside the Empire Pharmacy. She married Lora L. Stroud on Dec. 26, 1948 after eloping to Yuma, AZ. He predeceased her in 1981. She also survived the passing of her brother Ralph Perkins "Perk" Dorrel, her parents Pansy and Landy Dorrel and namesake aunt Alice (Dains) Ridgway (Ernest).
She is survived by son Stephen Stroud, of Modesto; daughters, Susan Cardona (Robert) of Whittier, and Sherri Stroud of San Francisco; grandchildren, Sarah Klein, Matthew Cardona, William Cardona; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Betty, David and Alice; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, students and friends.
Services include visitation at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 East Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson on Tuesday, April 19th from 1:00-7:00 P.M. Funeral and reception will take place on Wednesday, April 20th at 4:00 P.M. at the Empire Church Of The Brethren, 5101 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto. Private burial at a later date. Contributions in memory of the life and career of Alice N. Stroud may be made to the Library (for books only) at Alice N. Stroud Elementary School, 815 Frazine Road, Modesto, CA 95357.
