I never rode with Clayton very much; I couldn't keep up with him even though we were the same age. I did enjoy talking with him, though, about bike riding, especially when he decided almost ten years ago to do some double century (200 mile) rides as I had managed to complete two.  We talked much about the different availble double rides, their good and bad points.  Clayton's big goal, though, was to achieve the California Triple Crown, that is to complete at least three double centuries in one year.  He achieved that goal in 2012.  That year he completed four double centuries at the age of 73, an achievement of few riders at that age.  Clayton was an incredible bike rider and a great guy.  He was always positive and friendly.  We will miss very much not having him out there on the road with us demonstrating that even we oldsters can achieve much on a bicycle.

I met Clayton in the midst of a sandstorm on a Borrego Springs Zodiac. He spotted me curled up in the fetal position on the side of the road trying to get out of the wind. He stopped, coaxed me up, and sheltered me as best he could by having me closely draft him. He stayed with me all the way back to the start, which is what he would do if you were really in trouble, as I was. Two years later, I was drafting him again, this time going up the Garden Highway. He started out at 16 mph and then slowly increased his speed as the miles piled on, in the end pulling at 23 mph. I was hanging on again. He was generous, he was strong, and he was a lot of fun.

Clayton was a valued and active member of the Sacramento Wheelmen.  You never knew when or where you might see him riding on any given day.  I remember one day, I was out to lunch at Panera in Elk Grove with some girlfriends.  All of a sudden I hear “Hi Linda!”  Turned around and there was Clayton with a few other riders.  Asked him where they were off to and he said “To finish up our loop.”  One of the other riders said, “Yup, always a fun adventure with Clayton leading!”  That, to me, was Clayton in a nutshell.  I know he will be missed by the Wheelmen.
