Our brother, David Howard Johnson, named after our dad’s brother Howard, was the fifth youngest of six kids.  David was about two years old when we five little kids made the journey with Mom and Dad across country, moving from Detroit, Michigan to Turlock, California.  Then two years later we kids got upstaged by our youngest brother Neal being born in California.  Growing up in the hot little town of Turlock (I remember we left our footprints when we walked on the hot asphalt) David got royally sunburned, as we all did every summer, practically living at the Community Pool at Columbia Park.  He made lots of friends in the neighborhood and remained long-time buddies with many of them.
David cherished his “glory days” as a football star at Turlock High School.  He loved Turlock and lived there the majority of his life.  In High School, David met the young woman of his dreams and his future bride, Sandy Ogden.  From the first chicken joke he told on the night of their first date, (legend has it the chicken jokes went on all night) David and Sandy were truly in love.
Some of the things David enjoyed most were cruises, casinos and buffets.  He was a big Miami Dolphins fan and Los Angeles Dodger fan.  David liked to play golf, and would go out on the green with his friends and his nephew Matt.  He loved his pets.  Sammy, his little terrier, was like “a son” to him, he would say.  David had a jovial sense of humor and a talent for tall tales.  He and Sandy both loved Disney, and David thought Disney World in Orlando was the greatest place on Earth.
Dave and Sandy were inseparable and she was a dedicated caregiver in his declining years, when he became seriously ill.  One of their biggest frustrations was that Sandy couldn’t be at David’s side when he was in the hospital or rehab, due to the pandemic.  David was so grateful he could spend his final days at home happily with his beloved wife Sandy.   God rest his soul.
