Erline Richburg, age 86 passed away on Sunday December 2, 2018 from complications following a lengthy illness. Erline was born in Modesto on November 29, 1932. She graduated from Modesto High School and made her family home in Modesto. She enjoyed a rewarding career as a legal secretary for over 35 years at the law offices of Griffin, Conway & Jones, and then another 10 years at Sanwa Bank, in the ag loan department. The strong work ethic and example she led has continued on well with her children.During her retirement years she became involved with the Modesto Garden Club especially the spring and winter holiday luncheons where she cherished hosting family and friends at her beautifully decorated tables. At every event the table was full of special touches she envisioned for her theme. Erline was an exuberant hostess, and appreciated her guests being there to experience the festivities with her. She also maintained a beautiful flower and vegetable garden at her home where she spent many hours happily working, even on her walker hoping not to fall or tip over. She embraced each and every holiday, decorating her beautiful home and took great pride to host holiday gatherings with family and friends. This led to many shopping trips to add just one more treasure to decorate with. She set her tables early with great flair so everything was perfectly in place before guests arrived and could be admired. The greatest joy of her life was time spent with her children, Gary and Dana. Especially during the last 5 years of her illness Dana was a constant companion by her side. They saw each other nearly every day and spoke by phone at least once, every single day. Every Friday night that they could manage, they had dinner (and a beer) together at a local restaurant with sister Sharol. It is this time together that will be most treasured. Erline was a grand social butterfly – she was often Dana’s “Plus 1” at parties, weddings and work events. Especially in the early days at Ferry Morse Seed Company / Harris Moran Seed Company Erline could often be found smiling in the pictures at gatherings. Gary was also a great support to Erline during this time. He would come to visit and would help her in the yard, hang decorations for her, or anything she asked of him. He was happy to provide an occasional break for Dana and have the opportunity to spend special time with Erline. When Gary’s daughter Brandy was born - making Erline a Grandmother, her heart swelled with love for her only grandchild. Brandy spent a lot of her childhood with Erline and Dana. Erline also loved to travel. She passionately enjoyed many extended vacations to the Hawaiian Islands with her daughter Dana and sister Sharol, and many others that were fortunate enough to join them. When going to Hawaii, she always felt like she was returning home. She made many friends while there, some like Edgar and Bobby became like family over the years. During an early trip George, Sharol, Erline and Dana met a couple from England and made an everlasting friendship with them leading to their “English family” of Sally, James, Will and Jamie who have continued to visit their American family often, as recently as the past two summers. She had a great passion for sports, most especially the San Francisco Giants and 49ers and the Sacramento Kings. Erline and Dana had the opportunity to attend several Kings games, one for her 75th Birthday. The ticket stubs for these games were recently found among her treasured possessions as fond memories. She would watch the games live on TV as well as record them so she wouldn’t miss a moment and could go back and watch it again if they won! She also would often get up early to watch tennis tournaments so she and Dana could talk about the matches later in the day. Erline was delighted to accompany Dana on the great trip to the Wimbledon tennis tournament in England, to see her enjoy her greatest day there. Erline is survived by her loving children Dana Richburg, Gary Richburg (Dawn), and grand-daughter Brandy Richburg. Also her dear sister Sharol (George) Terrill, brother Dennis Samuelson, sister in law Adell Burch (Larry), and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Erline’s life will be held Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Lakewood Funeral Home Riverside Chapel, 900 Santa Fe Ave, Hughson, CA 95326. Directly following the memorial service will be a reception in the Lakewood Funeral Home Hospitality Room. The family asks that attendees dress in tropical prints or bright colors, in honor of how colorfully Erline lived her life. Fond memories, photos and expressions of sympathy may be shared on this website page for the Richburg family. What a lovely obituary that really captures the essence of how wonderful Erline was. She was amazing and I miss her. She was a joy to be around. She taught me so much about life and was so fun to talk to and go shopping with. She shared her love of flowers, gardening and decorating with me. You can see her influence in my home with her color scheme and ocean theme. She was so loving and classy. My favorite of all the people I ever care took for. She was a gem, a special woman. She touched my life and heart. I love Erline and am so thankful for having known her. My love and prayers are with her wonderful family.
