Besides his family, the other great love in his life were his Percheron horses and mules and all the wonderful friends he made through the horses. He belonged to the California Draft Horse and Mule Association. He took his horses on trail drives, Christmas Tree Lane, parades, horse pullings, antique work days, and with his covered wagon mules to elementary schools for history education. One highlight was pulling a 27-mule hitch in 2008. He loved using the antique horse drawn equipment to do his own fieldwork whenever possible.
George was a wonderful father and grandfather. He enjoyed being with his family, whether it was playing games, giving rides with his horse and buggy, or making Portuguese doughboys.
