Glennie Esther Golding was born on May 17, 1913 in Cooperton, Oklahoma to Frank and Francis Merck. She was the fifth child with four older brothers and was joined in future years by another brother and finally a little sister. At 102, she managed to outlive all of her siblings and passed peacefully on November 16, 2015 in her home at Dale Commons in Modesto.
Glennie was an adventurous woman and left the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma to come to California in 1936 where she met and married the love of her life, Charles Grant Golding. They were married for 61 years and had two sons, Jim and Charles Glenes Golding.
In her life, Glennie was a true homemaker. She loved gardening, cooking, knitting and making quilts. At 101, she finished hand quilting her 9th quilt top that she had pieced when she was a young girl in Oklahoma. She celebrated her accomplishment by giving one of the quilts to each of her grandchildren at Christmas in 2014. Glennie was always competitive and was known for her craftiness at games of Chance with her friends and family. She was a hard one to keep down in spirits and actions and lived life to its fullest till the very end.
Glennie was preceded in death by her son, Jim and her husband Charles. Survivors include daughter-in-law Pat, son Charles Glenes and his wife Beverly. She was blessed with nine grandchildren, Greg Golding, Eric Golding (Doreen), Tonya Bibbins (Greg), Jill Polhemus (Brandon), Chris Golding (Lynn), Justin Golding (Andi), Nick Golding (Julian), Jeremy Golding (Jennifer) and Josh Golding (Rachel). In addition she lovingly leaves behind 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, November 20th at 11 am at Lakewood Memorial Park, in the Restland Garden. The family would like to thank Dale Commons and Community Hospice for their excellent care and suggests that remembrances can be made to Community Hospice (4368 Spyres Way, Modesto 95356-9259) in lieu of flowers.
