Jack Dickman was born on August 10, 1928 in Dunsmuir, California; died on March 27, 2013, in Modesto, California, following many years of living with Parkinson's disease. Raised in the hills near Mount Shasta, Jack drove an ice truck at the age of 14, rose to Captain in the California Cadet Corps, played on an undefeated Dunsmuir High School basketball team, and looked forward to managing a local market. But he kept his options open. With his talent for basketball, and an interest in management, Jack earned a spot on the basketball team at the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he joined the Bachelordon fraternity (affiliated with Alpha Chi Rho), and dated fellow Dunsmuir High School graduate, Betty Hoare, a Berkeley Political Science major. Jack and Betty married in 1951. Following graduation from Berkeley in 1952, Jack began his career as a certified public accountant in the San Francisco office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., while Jack & Betty also managed an apartment building in San Francisco's Marina District. Then in 1956, Jack took a position as accountant for E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California. After roughly 38 years with Gallo, Jack retired in 1993 as a Vice President. Jack developed a passion for golf - which he has shared with his family - and became a member of Del Rio Golf & Country Club in 1960, where he enjoyed much of his leisure time. His passion for golf also became a wonderful excuse for a variety of travel experiences with his wife Betty, their children, and friends. As a CPA by training, Jack was frequently asked for advice by family and friends regarding financial matters. Always generous with his time and talent, any conversation with Jack about money, the wisdom of a particular investment, or even the pros and cons of a specific vacation destination, invariably started with Jack pulling out a yellow legal pad and a mechanical pencil. His written analyses, illustrated with lists and charts, are legendary. Jack played Bridge, and loved a good game of Gin Rummy. His opponents quickly learned that Jack's competitive side left no room for mercy. Jack also enjoyed Texas Hold'em and Blackjack. He frequently left the tables at Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas casinos with a fatter wallet than when he arrived. Jack is survived by Betty Dickman, his wife of 62 years; his son John G. Dickman (wife Montessa D. Holt), an attorney in Corona, California; his daughter Diane Dickman, with the NCAA in Indianapolis, Indiana; and his brother Jerry Dickman (wife Nancy), a retired Naval officer in Virginia Beach, Virgina. A memorial service will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home in the Riverside Chapel, 900 Santa Fe Ave. in Hughson, CA 95326 on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 11:00am. In memory of Jack, donations may be made to "Del Rio CC Foundation," 801 Stewart Road in Modesto, California 95356, which provides Central Valley youth with educational programs through golf. www.lakewoodhughson.com
