Larry Maines passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his home of 46 years on May 25, 2026. Larry was born in Carthage, TX but only spent a couple of years there before the family headed west to California. Modesto was home for the next 40 years where Larry graduated from Thomas Downey High School then began working as a mechanic. In 1980, Larry, his wife, and three children moved to Oakdale, while he continued his mechanic work in Modesto until retiring in 1990 to take over the family walnut orchard. Even though he was technically “retired”, friends continued to reach out when they needed car advice or a helping hand with repairs. Larry was always ready and willing to help. Larry’s car interests included restoring old Ford cars to “off to the showroom floor” condition. He belonged to the Early Ford V-8 Club of Stockton and traveled to many states to visit and compete in early Ford V-8 meets, taking top honors in his division more than once. Larry loved to travel. Always by car or motorhome, because he said traveling by land allowed him to see more of the country that way.
Family man, wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Larry is survived by his wife of (almost) 63 years, Lavilla; his son, Mike Maines of Oakdale; daughters, Michelle Maines of Modesto and Julie Bower of Paso Robles; and grandson, Luke Bower of Lake Elsinore. He is predeceased by sister, Bonnie Parker, and parents Mark & Evelyn Maines.
Viewing will be held Friday, June 12, 4:00pm-8:00pm. Services will be held Saturday, June 13, 11:00am both at Lakewood
Cemetery, Heritage Chapel.
