Ray Cunningham, a life-long truck driver and resident of the area, has died in Modesto at the age of 89. He was with family at the time of his passing, knowing he was loved. He was a resident of Samaritan Village in Hughson for the past three years.
Ray was born on April 23, 1923 in Knob, Arkansas, to Jess Riley Cunningham and Flora Lee Cunningham. His early life was spent on the farm, both going to the little Knob Country School and working with his father and brothers in the cotton fields. His family moved to Waterford in 1936 and Ray remained near Modesto for the duration of his life. Ray served in World War 2 as an army medic in the 81st "Wildcat" Division, fighting in battles on Angaur Island and Peleiu Island. Upon his return from the war Ray began his life's career as a truck driver. He drove for many local companies, including Gallo, Tri Valley and Talbot. Ray finished his career working and driving for Cunningham Ranch in Hughson. He was always well appreciated for his hard work, dedication, dry sense of humor, and his colorful way of telling stories of his past. Ray also had a kind heart for many people and was in turn loved by many who worked with him.
Ray is survived by sons Ray and Jimmy, and his brother Ham Cunningham. Also surviving, are nephews Kenn and Dick Cunningham of Hughson, Wally Thompson of Turlock, Riley Cunningham of Modesto, Harold Lutes of Oregon, Boyce Lutes of Ceres, Bob McGee of Southern California and Darrell McGee of Florida.
