Lou Katherine “Kathy” Chavez, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Merced, California, in 1955 to William Gay and Louise Francis Wine-Gay.
Kathy lived a life centered on love, connection, and devotion to those around her. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her family and friends, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and warmth. She loved to travel and shop, embracing life’s simple pleasures and sharing them with the people she cherished most. Her heart also extended to her beloved pets, Charlie and Zoe, who brought her comfort and companionship.
From a young age, Kathy’s strength and selflessness were evident. She stepped into a parental role for her two younger brothers, Joe Chavez and Pat Gay, helping guide and care for them during their teenage years and into adulthood. This unwavering sense of responsibility and love defined who she was throughout her life.
Kathy met the love of her life, Gilbert Chavez, while working at the Wigwam, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned 55 years. She later worked at Central Supply for approximately 15 years, where she built meaningful relationships and demonstrated her strong work ethic. Driven by a passion to help others, Kathy returned to school and began a new chapter in education. In 2005, she became a high school counselor at Waterford High School, where she made a lasting impact on countless students. She was known for her compassion, guidance, and unwavering support, and she loved her students deeply. She continued in this role until her retirement at the age of 65.
Kathy was a proud and devoted mother to her children, Dwayne Chavez (Brandy Chavez) and Rebecca Donaldson (Donnie Donaldson). She was a loving grandmother to Chandler, Daniel, and Hunter Chavez, Brian Creek, Kaycee Creek (D’Andre Griffin), Kaytlin Garcia (Adrian Garcia), and Alyssa Donaldson (Frankie Casale). Her legacy continues through her cherished great-grandchildren, Brayden Castrillo, Bentley Creek, Amiyah Green, Jaylah Green, and Ja’siah Griffin, who brought her immense joy.
Kathy faced many health challenges throughout her life, including undergoing two kidney transplants, yet she carried herself with strength, resilience, and grace. After a lifetime of perseverance, her body grew tired, and she peacefully went to rest from her home, free from pain and sickness.
Kathy will be remembered for her kind heart, her strength, her deep love for her family, and the countless lives she touched throughout her journey. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her love and legacy will live on in all who knew her.
