Maria S. Alanis

Maria Alanis was born on October 22, 1925 in Gral.Teran, Mexico. She is survived by her husband Domingo Alanis and her 6 children; Ramiro, Gloria, Oliverio, Osiel, Efrain (Gene) and Elizabeth; siblings, Elida, Jesus, Juanena and Santos. She had 27 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. She was raised in Estacion Aldamas, Nuevo Leon, Mexico where she met and married Domingo Alanis on February 9, 1945. They moved to Riverbank where she lived for 54 years. She worked at hunt Wesson for many years and retired in 1985. Her favorite hobbies were sewing, gardening and cooking for her family. She was well known for her delicious tamales and delicate polvorones cookies. Maria was an active parishioner at Saint Frances of Rome in Riverbank. She was an activist not only for her people, but for her parish community where she petitioned and succeeded in bringing a mass spoken in Spanish. She also was involved in various ministries that include; The Crusillos, Encuentros Matrimoniales, the Guadalupanos, and was a Eucharastic Minister. She was involved in the United Farm Workers march, where she walked with Cesar Chavez, and housed people that were participating in the march. Maria also fought for women's rights to have equal opportunities in all canaries. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 1st from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with a rosary at 6:00 at Lakewood Funeral Home (Heritage Chapel), 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson, CA. A Holy Mass will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at 1:00 PM at Saint Frances of Rome in Riverbank.
