Michael V. Olson, 69, of La Grange passed away at his home on February 13, 2013 surrounded by his family. A viewing was held on February 17 and there will be a private interment at Lakewood Memorial Park. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
Mike was born on July 13, 1943. He graduated from Turlock HS in 1961 and soon began his career by working in the family business. Mike followed in his father's steps, and his son in his, as the second of three generations in the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. He was a member of L.U. 437/442 and the UA for 50 years where he served as a mentor and leader for his apprentices and colleagues.
For many years Mike enjoyed traveling with his wife Jeanette and his best friends to places like Vienna, Rome, Pompeii, Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. His travels brought him such joy—the richness of history, the art, the food, and the people he traveled with. A favorite family trip was taken last summer when he spent time at Pajaro Dunes with all of his children and many of his grandchildren.
Some of his favorite pastimes: Watching NASCAR races; telling stories, often "embellished" for dramatic effect; talking politics, hot rods and the overall state of the union; drinking good wine with good people; and spending time with his family. For the past 15 years he enjoyed participating in activities involving his son Anthony. He was a troop leader for Boy Scout Troop #17 and served as president of the La Grange School Board for 6 years.
Mike is survived by his wife Jeanette Cole Olson of La Grange; his children Kevin, Eric, Beth (Scott), Julie (Scott), Jennifer (Brian), and Anthony; his grandchildren Stephanie, Caty, David, Sebastian, Francesca, Brittney, Leah, Dominic, Hadley, Lauren, and Olivia; his great-grandchildren Riley, Addalyn, and Robbie; and his siblings Lance Olson, Claudia Ross, Kevin Olson, MaryLou Haney, and Ed Koops.
A tattered newspaper clipping discovered on his desk after his passing best summarizes the type of man, father, husband, and friend he was:
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."
He lived fully, laughed often, loved much, and was loved much in return.
