Raúl Canela Perez was born on October 20, 1944, in Michoacán, Mexico, and passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026, at his home in Riverbank, California, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and family members. He was 82 years old.
Raúl was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and man of deep faith whose life was defined by hard work, sacrifice, and a commitment to caring for others.
Born the fourth of nine children, Raúl grew up in humble circumstances in Mexico. With only one year of formal education, he began working at an early age to help support his mother and siblings. He quickly learned what it truly meant to be a man when, as a teenager, he assumed the responsibilities of caregiver and provider for his family. He understood and embodied the principles of responsibility, sacrifice, and service to others, personifying these character traits throughout the rest of his life. At 19, he immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities to provide for his family, bringing with him a strong work ethic, determination, and a desire to build a better future for his loved ones.
Raúl spent his entire adult life working in the canneries, orchards, and agricultural fields, demonstrating a strong work ethic that endured well into his 70s. He never shied away from arduous work and earned a reputation as a man of unwavering dependability, integrity, and personal responsibility. He was a man whose word could be trusted and whose actions always reflected his character. Raúl possessed extraordinary wisdom, developed through a lifetime of firsthand experiences and overcoming life's challenges.
Around 1969, Raúl met Josefina while she was working at her brother’s restaurant, El Ranchito. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong love story, and he delighted in sharing his own perspective of how he and Josefina met and began their courtship. The way he told their story was often as entertaining as the story itself, bringing smiles and laughter to those fortunate enough to hear it. Raúl and Josefina married on November 7, 1970, and together, they built a beautiful family and an enduring marriage that would span nearly 56 years.
Raúl and Josefina settled in Riverbank, where they purchased a home and raised their four children: Sara, Josephina, Paula, and Pedro. Each child’s name carried special meaning, honoring family members or traditions important to them. Their home became the foundation of a family that would grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a place where countless celebrations, traditions, and memories were shared.
Raúl and Josefina shared a love of music, dancing together, family celebrations, and visiting friends. These joyful occasions, filled with laughter, happiness, and companionship, created cherished moments that their children and grandchildren will forever hold dear.
Raúl took immense pride in providing for his family, and he was determined to give his wife and children the stability, opportunities, and security he never had growing up. He was fiercely protective of those he loved while remaining gracious and humble in his treatment of others.
Raúl loved life’s simple pleasures, and he took tremendous pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Raúl was funny and had an ability to bring humor to almost any situation. He could make others laugh by offering a witty remark, an unexpected observation, or by telling a story in his own unique and entertaining way. Raúl had great affection for his grandchildren and great grandchildren and often gave them playful and affectionate nicknames which have become treasured memories that will be long remembered and cherished.
Raúl had a strong personality and never hesitated to offer his opinion. The words he spoke were filled with profound wisdom and sage advice. His encouragement carried a powerful message: “Give it your all. Keep pushing forward. Never give up.” These were more than words of support; they reflected the determination and perseverance with which Raúl lived his own life.
Raúl especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends, taking an interest in both their work and personal activities. He could always be counted on to offer encouragement, and he took genuine pride in celebrating the accomplishments and milestones of every member of his large family. Those simple conversations will live on forever in our memories, but more importantly, they reflect his sincere interest in the lives of those he loved.
Each of Raúl's children, grandchildren, and family members will remember him in their own special way. There will be stories retold, familiar expressions repeated, and moments when a simple memory of him brings an unexpected smile. These memories and retelling of stories will continue to bring joy to his family for generations to come.
Throughout his life, Raúl remained committed to helping his mother, siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family members, including those who remained in Mexico. He always made sure they had a place to call home, a meal to eat, a helping hand when needed, and someone they could depend on in times of need.
Raúl found true joy in his ability to help others. He never viewed his acts of generosity as a burden or sacrifice. To him, being in a position to help someone was more than an obligation; he considered it an honor, a privilege, and a blessing in itself and he never sought recognition or praise for his servitude.
As a devout Catholic, Raúl faithfully attended Mass and knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His faith was not simply something he professed, but something he practiced through his service to others. His generosity, compassion, and willingness to help those in need reflected the Christian values he carried throughout his life.
Raúl’s greatest legacy will not be measured by what he accumulated during his lifetime, but by what he gave to others, the family he provided for, and the example he leaves behind. From his humble beginnings in Mexico to building a home and raising a family in the United States, he never forgot where he came from or those who needed his help.
The life Raúl lived and the values he embodied are beautifully reflected in the words of Jesus Christ, as recorded in Matthew 25:35:
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
Raúl lived these words through his actions, demonstrating his faith through acts of service to others.
Raúl was a man determined to create a better life for those he loved, and by every measure, he was beyond successful. His greatest accomplishments were not defined by what he achieved for himself, but by the security he created for others, the lives he enriched, and the lasting legacy he built for his family.
We are forever grateful to God for the blessing of Raúl in our lives, as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and cherished friend. We give thanks for his unwavering love, the sacrifices he made, the provisions he faithfully provided, and the countless ways he enriched our lives. Above all, we are grateful for the privilege of knowing and loving a man whose greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was his family, whom he loved with all his heart.
May he rest in eternal peace in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
