Richard Milton Smith of Modesto, CA passed away on March 31st, 2024 at the age of 90.
Richard was born in Kansas City, Kansas to parents William and Pearl Warren Smith. He was the “baby” of the family, with one brother and two sisters who kept an eye on him during his early years.
Richard married the love of his life, Ida, and began to grow his family. He served in the U.S. Army as a cook until 1956. Richard moved to Stanislaus County in his late 20s, working as a fork lift driver at American Can Company, also known as James Rivers. He and Ida welcomed four children into the world.
Some of the best memories revolving around Richard included how he spent his time with his family. His daughters fondly remember him playing as “Santa Claus” during the holiday season for his kids and grandkids, as well as the “Tooth Fairy”. Richard loved his family, and he was not afraid to show it. He’d always tell his loved ones, “If I didn’t have you, I wouldn’t have nobody.” He was a well-loved man who will be dearly missed by all.
Richard is survived by his children Lori Ann Mattingly and Kathi Jean Beevers, as well as 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren with #9 on the way. He is preceded in death by wife wife Ida, daughter Vicki Ford, son Richard Jr. Smith, grandson Richard Smith, great-grandson Shane Williams Jr., brother William B. Smith, sisters Dolly H. Bray and Betty Lou Markee, and parents William B. and Pearl Warren Smith.
A Celebration of Life for Richard will be hosted on April 18th, 2024 at 1:00 PM in Heritage Chapel at Lakewood Funeral Home, located at 900 Santa Fe Avenue in Hughson, CA. Following the Celebration of Life will be a graveside service at Lakewood Memorial Park.
