It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Dr. Rox Charles Burkett, M.D.
Rox was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dr. Leo George Burkett, M.D. and Fern Board Burkett. He lived a life defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
Rox was an exceptional student and athlete. He attended Marsh Valley high school where he was named “Mr. Marsh Valley” and played football, basketball, baseball and track. As the starting quarterback for his high school football team, he led them to an undefeated season in 1965, earning All-State Quarterback honors and continuing his football career as quarterback at the University of Utah. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah School of Medicine and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, reflecting both his academic excellence and dedication to his profession.
He began his medical career at San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, California, where he enjoyed being close to his Uncle Bob and Aunt Elaine—and having the opportunity to golf whenever he could. He later established his medical practice in Modesto, and spent more than 50 years caring for thousands of patients.
One of Rox's greatest gifts was his compassion. He believed everyone deserved quality medical care, regardless of their circumstances. He was one of the old-school physicians who made house calls and never hesitated to help those in need. His patients knew him not only as a skilled physician but as a kind and caring friend.
In 2012, Rox began a new chapter as a volunteer physician at a free medical clinic, where he found immense joy in continuing to serve his community. He served as the Branch President for the LDS church and volunteered at the local prison, providing medical care and offering encouragement to inmates, believing every person deserved dignity and compassion.
Rox proudly served his country as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, serving as a Captain and Surgeon in Tooele, Utah.
Outside of medicine, Rox embraced life with enthusiasm. A lifelong golfer, he became a member of Del Rio Country Club in 1973 and won the Club Championship. He loved traveling the world, playing many of its most beautiful golf courses while checking destinations off his bucket list.
His happiest moments were often spent with his daughters skiing and fishing in Sun Valley, Idaho, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Whether on the golf course, in the mountains, or around the dinner table, Rox's greatest joy came from spending time with the people he loved.
Dr. Rox Charles Burkett leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, integrity, and service. His family, friends, colleagues, and the countless patients whose lives he touched will remember him not only for his accomplishments but for his compassionate heart and the difference he made in so many lives.
He is survived by his four daughters: Alaine Moulos (Greg), Audra Black (Kelly), Angela Sherman (Keith), and Amy Elshani (Flagen); ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his five siblings; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandsons, Flagen "FJ" Elshani Jr. and Gabriel Elshani.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 6, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:30 a.m. at The Fruit Yard.
