W.D. "Doug" Camp

W.D. “Doug” Camp was born in Arkansas and migrated with his mother, father and 8 siblings during the dust bowl era. They settled on an acre of land in Empire, CA. Our father’s life was filled with many different experiences. His work started at 9 years old in the cutting sheds. As a teen, he worked as a butcher in Empire. He joined the Merchant Marines at 16 years of age. During his service, he steered a ship through the Panama Canal. He walked through the streets of Europe. He was then drafted into the Army and served his country in the Philippines. After WWII, he rewarded himself with his earnings by buying a convertible and cruised downtown Modesto during the “original” graffiti days. Along the way, he became a shade tree mechanic, owning over a hundred vehicles during his life. He bought and operated a bar in Woodland, CA until the love of his life walked through the door. At age 29, he became a husband and then later fathered 3 girls, who became his world. In 1957 he moved back to Empire, CA to be closer to relatives. He gained employment with Shell Development, where he worked for 30 years until his retirement. One of his most prized accomplishments was buying houses and then relocating them to various properties around Empire, CA. He would do all of the labor himself, while helping anyone who he came across that was in need. All while he was working 40+ hours a week at his job.

Loved ones left behind to cherish his memory are his Daughters, Sheri Wood, Gigi LaBarre and Veta (Perry) Yost, Grandchildren, Hilary (Roy, Jr.) Guice, Derek (Natasha) Porter, Allen (Jessica) LaBarre, Melissa LaBarre, Andrea (Hector) Sosa, Breann (Sofia) Delatorre-Yost, Great Grandchildren, Anecia, Immanuel and Tomas Pasillas, Desmond Porter, Zander LaBarre, Samuel, Mya and Arianna Sosa plus many Cousins, Nieces, Nephews and Friends. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00AM on Thursday, June 4th, 2015 at Lakewood Memorial Park 900 Santa Fe Avenue in Hughson.
