On January 5, 2014, Almasi Irvin Hanks left this mortal world and winged his way to the Abha Paradise, having attained the age of 36 on December 27, 2013. Almasi will be sorely missed by his mother Cheryl Love Hanks, father Irvin Hanks and wife Eileen, brother Kamal Hanks, grandmother Lavern Hanks, beloved cousins, and a host of extended family and dear friends.
Almasi showed talent at an early age, building and programming computers while attending the engineering magnet program at Booker T. Washington High School, an interest nourished by his maternal grandfather, William Ansley Love. Almasi spent the summer of his fifteenth year in Austria, visiting the family of Sigfreid and Cherry Steinwender of Houston, Texas. Shortly after his nineteenth birthday, Almasi traveled to Thailand and spent four months of youth service at the Baha’i inspired Santitham School for children in Yosathon Province (see photo on facing page). While in Thailand, Almasi also traveled to New Delhi, India, and was invited to attend the first national Baha’i youth conference held in that country.
Having developed abilities in the martial arts beginning at age five, Almasi enjoyed karate and later Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing). He also enjoyed riding motorbikes, his favorite mode of transportation. Almasi loved listening to music, having played the violin and cello.
Almasi attended the magnet schools in Houston, including T.H. Rogers School for the Gifted and Talented. He also attended the Baha’i Sunday schools in Missouri City and in Houston. He was active in the Baha’i Youth (dance) Workshop. A few months prior to his passing, Almasi became a licensed pharmacy technician.
