Dr. Charlyn Ruth Kyles of Spring, Texas, was the fourth child and first daughter of seven children born to Joe E. Kyles and Elbenia Richardson Kyles on November 5, 1948, in Houston, Texas. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at an early age. Dr. Charlyn was a licensed and ordained minister who preached her first sermon at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Houston, Texas on Mother’s Day 1992.
Following her call to ministry, she pursued a theological education at Houston Graduate School of Theology (1997-2005), receiving both a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry Theology/Theological Studies.
Dr. Charlyn has been a member of The Luke Church, Humble, Texas for over ten years. She loved and enjoyed being a member of “The Luke”, remaining a faithful parishioner until her death. She served in many ministries at “The Luke”: the Diaconate Ministry, Intercessory Prayer Team, LinkedIn-New Members’ Orientation, College Fair Ministry, The Luke Women’s Ministry, Me & We Ministry, and the Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway.
Dr. Charlyn graduated from Kashmere High School, Houston, Texas in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemistry, Biology from Texas Woman's University, Denton, Texas in 1969. Following graduation, she worked at Baylor Medical Center conducting scientific medical research. She began a career teaching science in 1973 and continued her higher education at Texas Southern University (1984 – 1988) receiving a Master of Science in Secondary Science Education, Counseling Certification, and Educational Administration Certification.
After a 42-year career with the Houston Independent School District (Sharpstown High School, Contemporary Learning Center and DeVry Institute at Bellaire High School), Dr. Charlyn retired in October 2015. Upon retirement from the school system, she trained and worked as a Chaplain in Spiritual Care at MD Anderson Hospital. She also truly enjoyed serving in the following two organizations and was actively involved.
Dr. Charlyn was initiated as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter on November 2, 2008. She actively served on numerous chapter committees, including the Ivy Educational and Charitable Foundation of Houston, Incorporated. Under two administrations, she served as Chaplain, 2017-2022. In 2016, Dr. Charlyn was inducted into the Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, Humble Intercontinental Chapter (HIC). She served as Chaplain, worked on various committees, and supported all HIC projects.
Dr. Charlyn was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Kenneth R. Kyles and Michael T. Kyles, a niece, Yolanda Michelle Kyles and a nephew, Roland L. Mitchell.
She is survived by and leaves to mourn her only son, Robert C. Raglin, II; two brothers, Sirron Kyles, Gregory A. Kyles (Victoria); two sisters, Cheryl Kyles Mitchell (Ronald), Sharon Kyles Ross; two paternal aunts, Katie Ball and Noella Burditte; nieces & nephews, Debra Richard (Ronald), Symantha A. Simmons (Kevin), Ronette Alexis (David), Anitra Kyles, Stephanie Ross Gaston (Jimmy), Tiffany Kyles, Rodney L. Mitchell, Samuel L. Ross III, Tremeice Kyles, Kristina Kyles, Dakota Swan (Christopher) and many more family members and lifelong friends.
A viewing ceremony for Charlyn will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Luke Church, 2380 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77396. A homecoming celebration will occur Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 2380 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77396. A committal will occur Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM, 2380 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77396.
Charlyn will be laid to rest in Calvary Hill Cemetery , 21723 Aldine Westfield Rd., Humble, Texas 77338.
