A memorial service will be held at noon on Sunday, Dec. 5 at Rothko Chapel, 3900 Yupon St.
Dewayne was born July 13, 1947 in Hammond, Ind. to Dinver and Dorothy. A Thornton Fractional North High School valedictorian, he earned a bachelor’s from Rice University in 1970 and a master’s from Rutgers University in 1976. Ever the overachiever, Dewayne worked for the City of Houston for 25 years, notably serving as chairman of the Urban Consortium Energy Task Force. After briefly serving in the U.S. Foreign Service, Dewayne fulfilled his dream of teaching while earning his PhD in public policy at the University of Houston, which he received in May.
Dewayne was a family man who loved good food and lots of laughter, both of which he enjoyed regularly and without reserve. He also traveled extensively, visiting six continents and almost all 50 states in his lifetime.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathie; son, Eric; daughter, Laura and husband Chris; four stepchildren; four grandchildren; brothers, Ray and James; sisters, Marie and Joan; ex-wife, Patricia; and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Denny Ray.
His family requests that flowers be sent to Calvary Hill Funeral Home in Humble.
