Jackie Louise Washington was born in Houston, Texas on December 2, 1941, to Henry and Birdie Washington. Jackie loved working with people and spent over 30 years in customer service. While residing in California, Jackie worked for the Urban League and did volunteer work for the NAACP. Jackie was a staunch advocate for voter registration and voting rights.
Jackie accepted the Lord as a young adult and was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, Altadena, California for many years prior to relocating back to Houston. She rededicated her life to the Lord and attended church services as often as her health permitted.
Jackie returned to school later in life and received training in the health care industry at Houston Community College and worked for a number of years with hospital patients and seniors. Jackie often comforted her clients by telling them that God was faithful and that they had nothing to fear because they were in his hands.
Jackie’s great love was working with children. She was a counselor for the YMCA’s “Before and After” School programs and worked for Katy ISD as a bus attendant and teacher’s aide for disabled children. Jackie had an extraordinary and loving rapport with the children and her famous correcting phrase, when children misbehaved, was “don’t try it.” The children loved “Ms. Jackie.” Jackie retired from Katy Independent School District in 2017 after over ten years of service.
Jackie loved traveling and made yearly trips with her friends to Las Vegas and Coushatta and enjoyed family trips to New Mexico and Arizona to visit relatives. Her family teased her that her hobby was “bingo.” Jackie dearly loved and was devoted to her family, providing help and guidance whenever needed. Jackie was an excellent cook. She always planned lavish feasts for family gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas and always had plenty for neighbors and friends. She was a loving and generous person who was always willing to help others.
Jackie’s faith in God was her strength as she fought a good fight for over five years against the cancer diagnosis. Jackie went to be with the Lord on November 17, 2022. A memorial service will be held on December 9, 2022 at Calvary Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery in Humble, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Birdie Washington, a brother, John Washington, and her beloved poodle “Fifi.” Jackie is survived by her children, Gale Van Ross, Chevonda Van Ross, and Dominique Jones; a brother, William Fawell; a sister, Carolyn Greer; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a nephew and a niece.
