Jerry Lynn Ponton

Jerry was born in 1938 in Hammond, IN to loving parents Hershel and Louise Ponton. The family moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1946, where he graduated from Tucson High School then joined the Air Force. He spent 10 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard, where he worked on Jet Fighter Aircraft.

Jerry met and married the love of his life, Sharon Stinson Ponton in 1958. Their son Chip was born in 1963. Jerry joined Continental Airlines in 1964, and for 20 years held various positions that took them to Dallas, TX, Redondo Beach, CA, Midland, TX, Kailua, HI, Colorado Springs, CO, and finally Houston, TX. He was able to work and travel to Australia, England, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. His final 14 years before retirement was spent working for Ashley Capital.

After retiring he enjoyed traveling, visiting family, working with senior groups, and ministering to the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes. In 2007 he attended the Methodist Lay College, graduating in Pastoral Lay Ministry. He was a Pastoral Minister at Bering Church in Houston. Jerry and Sharon formed and led two Senior Adult Ministries for a total of 13 years.

Jerry was a longstanding member of the Civil Air Patrol, National Defense Transportation Association, a founding board member of Stephens House and served on the Council of Congregations of SEARCH Homeless Project.

Jerry is predeceased by his wife Sharon and survived by his son Chip, daughter-in-law Marti, granddaughter Julia Ponton, all of Phoenix, AZ, grandson Evan Ponton of O’Fallon MO, brother William and wife Loretta Ponton of Reno, NV and nephews and nieces.

A funeral service for Jerry will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Calvary Hill Funeral Home and Cem, 21723 Aldine-Westfield Road, Humble, TX 77338. A committal service with military honors will occur Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Calvary Hill Funeral Home, immediately following the committal service there will be a catered reception at Calvary Hill Funeral Home.
