Lorraine Emma Lumpkin passed away on June 7, 2021 in Spring, Texas at the age of 93. Lorraine was born on March 17, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA. She met the love of her life, Virgil Mills Lumpkin, when his ship, the USS St. Louis, returned to port in Philadelphia after an extensive tour in the South Pacific theatre at the end of WWII. Lorraine and Virgil dated for one month and were married on May 25, 1946.

Lorraine was lovingly known as “Itsy” to her family and Itsy leaves eight grandchildren, Scott Gibson, Jason Appelbaum (Brook), Payton Lumpkin (Ansley), Raegan Callaio (Chris), Garrett Blumenshine, Paige Porter (Simon), Colie Brown (Sam), Ilyse Dawicki and ten great grandchildren, Brenham & Avan Appelbaum, Riley & Parker Lumpkin, Westyn & Michael Callaio, Beaux & Cash Porter, Josh & Emma Dawicki.
Shortly after being married, Lorraine and Virgil moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where Virgil attended Oklahoma State University on the GI Bill. Lorraine and Virgil moved often, raising their four children in Springfield, MO and the oilfields of Oklahoma (Bartlesville, Shidler, Ponca City, Oklahoma City) and Texas (Odessa, Pampa) until they settled in Borger, Texas in 1967. Lorraine loved to travel with her family to the mountains and enjoyed many years of family ski trips in Colorado where she learned to ski at the young age of 50. Lorraine equally loved the beach and upon retirement she and Virgil would spend 3 months of each year with friends at South Padre Island as well as initiating an annual family beach trip each summer to Gulf Shores, Alabama. All of Lorraine’s offspring share her love of the beach and continue the family beach trip tradition to this day, with Itsy teaching many of her grandchildren the following song:
By the sea, by the beautiful sea, you and me, you and me
Oh how happy we’ll be, I love to be beside your side
Beside the sea, beside the sea, by the beautiful sea.
Lorraine and Virgil moved to Spring, Texas in 1998, attended Resurrection Lutheran Church (RLC) and were married for 54 years until Virgil passed away in 2000. Lorraine was an active member of the RLC Grief Group for many years, loved gathering with friends and family for any occasion, always enjoyed a good game of cards, but more than anything, cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
