God’s gift of Luther Charles Wilson, Sr., arrived on December 31, 1956 in Los Angeles, California. He moved to Waco, Texas with his Mother, Mildred Hardin Hubby and siblings. He was parented by Clarence Hubby, his Step-father, whom he affectionately called “Daddy.” He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church by the late Rev. C.L. Roberts. Luther actively participated as a member of the Choir, Junior Deacons and attended Baptist Training Union, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
Luther graduated as Salutatorian from Jefferson Moore High School in Waco, Texas in 1975. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Luther was employed in the oil and gas industry for over 35 years. His initial assignment was with Exxon, which spanned 18 years. In 1998, he was employed by BP, which afforded him opportunities in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Tobago, Cairo, Egypt and Luanda, Angola. In December 2015, he retired to Houston, Texas.
He was united in marriage to his one true love, the former Cheryl Yvonne Brown, on April 3, 1982. They were blessed with 2 Sons, Luther Charles, Jr. and Lance Coleman.
Luther had a strong faith in God and devoted himself to serving the church community. In 1982, God led him to join Mount Corinth Baptist Church, under the late Pastor A. Louis Patterson, Jr. He served as Captain of a Valor Group, President of the A. Louis Fellowship Choir and was a member of the Voices of Corinth and the Soul Winners Action Team. While residing in Trinidad, he served the Westside Community Church on the Assist Team, the Level 2 Leadership Team, and hosted a weekly Care and Share Group in his home. In Cairo, he united with Maadi Community Church and served as an Usher and participated in Life Groups. Upon moving to Luanda, he joined the Angola International Christian Church. Shortly after returning home, he united at the Fallbrook Church where he joyfully participated in the Discipleship Ministry, the Marriage Ministry, and the Men of Valor.
Luther’s service to The Lord was evident in how he cared for his family, who will always be grateful for his sacrificial love and commitment. He enjoyed traveling with his son’s sports teams and would often capture photographs of the entire team and share them with the team parents. The athletes appreciated his mentorship and encouragement. Luther also volunteered at his son’s school for fundraising events, including After Prom and Sports Awards.
From the time of his lymphoma diagnosis, he taught us lessons of gratitude, joy, purposeful living, long suffering and facing each day with a willingness to give his best.
On September 27, 2017, surrounded by Family and Friends, our ferocious warrior transitioned from labor to reward. We look forward to a heavenly reunion and praise God for sharing him with us.
To cherish his memory are his Beloved Wife of 35 years, Cheryl Wilson, Loving Sons, Luther Charles, Jr. and Lance Coleman, Siblings Mildred Howard, Edward Darnell Plump (Yolanda), twins Anthony and Annette Wilson Holmes, Clarence Wayne (Peggy), adopted Sister Gloria Martin (Carl), and a whole host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, In-Laws, God Daughter, Janay Boykin, Family and Friends.
