Michael Edward “Mike” Grant, 67, was born on November 5, 1958, in Beaumont, Texas, to Lewis and Mattie Grant. He later made his home in Huntsville, Texas, and Houston, Texas, where he built a life marked by faith, family, hard work, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Mike took great pride in his career as a Sergeant with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His work was important to him, not only because of the responsibility he carried, but because it allowed him to provide for and care for his family. While attending Prairie View A&M University, Mike became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and deeply cherished the friendships and brotherhood he shared with his line brothers and fraternity brothers.
At the center of Mike’s life was his family. For 49 years, he shared a life with his wife, Daphynne Denise Grant, whom he affectionately called “Pumpkin.” They enjoyed going to plays, spending time together, and opening their home to friends and family, especially for their Super Bowl gatherings. As a father to Michael and Karess, Mike was consistent, present, protective, and dependable. No matter the circumstances, his children knew their dad was only a phone call away. As a grandfather, he loved spoiling his grandchildren with snacks and candy, joking with them, holding them, and simply enjoying their company.
Mike loved the Lord and was a man of prayer. He could be found on his knees each night praying, and throughout his life, he called on the name of Jesus often. His faith remained an important part of who he was.
He was an avid and skilled fisherman and hunter, he loved being outdoors as much as he loved listening to music, singing, watching barbecue shows, action series, and movies. Those who knew Mike will also remember his unmistakable sense of humor. He loved making the people around him laugh, sometimes with a joke that was just inappropriate enough to keep everyone on their toes.
Mike also treasured his longtime classmates and friends, frequently calling just to talk and laugh with them. Among them was his best friend, Tim Simon, whose faithful friendship and presence meant so much to him and his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Grant. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Daphynne Denise Grant; his children, Michael E. Grant II, and Karess Grant Linzer; his grandchildren, Peyton Grant, Peysley Grant, Tori Linzer, and Liam Linzer; his mother, Mattie Grant; his sister, Pamela Hawthorne; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Karen Kennedy-Moore, Billy Moore, Mary Guillory, Richard Guillory, and Michael Kennedy; his nieces and nephews, Areal Hawthorne, Mark Hawthorne II, Elysia Hawthorne, Keisha Henton, Michael Kennedy, and Jasmine Guillory; his great-niece, Nova; along with his loving cousins, extended family members, classmates, and many dear friends
Mike will be remembered for his laughter, his faith, his steadfast presence, and the love and devotion he gave so freely to his family.
