The photo is from the last time we met in person, Ruben -  2015 Houston.  Last time we saw each other was just over a year ago, when we spoke over Teams, and we chatted about your fantastic new job in Ireland, and your beautiful family and how much you loved them. Yet it feels like yesterday when I met and hired you... back in 2006.  When we travelled together to Colombia ...  that trip is one of my great memories of you; how proud you were to show me around your beautiful country, and introduce me to your family. You were smart and hard-working; which is why I loved working with you. But you were also one of the kindest and most gentle of men, which is why I treasured our friendship.  People like you are rare and the world is the poorer for your departure.

Rubén was a great person and a good friend. I am grateful our paths crossed. It was my privilege to have had the opportunity to work with him as well. We had many chats over coffee. From our conversations it was clear his priorities were always his family, his team and his work. I miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with Doris, and his sons. I send them love and blessings.

Ruben was a visionary and motivational leader that was always thinking ahead of his time.  It was always an adventure to walk into his office and have a morning coffee. His forward thoughts fueled my imagination and drive to accomplish things that may have seemed not plausible. 

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.  He will be missed dearly.

Primo, you will be deeply missed. You were a true example to all of us—showing us what hard work, dedication, and carrying a smile through everything truly mean. Your memory will live on through the stories I will proudly share with my children about the moments we shared together, both in Colombia and in London. You will never be forgotten.

Dear Doris, Leonardo, and Leandro,

Our hearts are with you, our cousins Diego and John, and the entire family during this time of deep sorrow.

My cousin Rubén was truly extraordinary—a great man, with an unwavering drive and tenacity, whose warmth, affection, and generosity touched everyone around him, and I will always cherish how lovingly he spoiled my siblings and me as we grew up together in Colombia. Some of the happiest memories of my childhood are intertwined with the Rodríguez family—memories that have stayed with me throughout my life. From those early days to the special moments we shared later in the UK, his love, humility, and integrity always shone through.

Even now, I feel as though I can still hear Rubén’s laughter—contagious and powerful, overflowing with joy and energy, a sound unlike any other, filling every space and lingering in my heart.

His legacy lives on through you and in the hearts of all who knew him. May you feel surrounded by comfort, strength, and love. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Queridos Doris, Leonardo y Leandro:

Que Dios les conceda paz y calma para sobrellevar la profunda tristeza que hoy viven.
Rubén Darío fue más que mi sobrino: fue mi amigo. Su nobleza de corazón y su temperamento lo hicieron único para mí. Siempre lo sentí muy cercano, llevándome en él la esencia de su mamá, mi querida hermana.

Lloré con dolor sus tristezas y mi corazón se alegró con cada uno de sus logros. Todo lo que compartía conmigo lo hacía con un cariño especial. Aunque separados por la distancia, siempre estuvo presente en mi mente: su alegría, sus carcajadas y las historias con las que siempre me hacía reír. Cuando estaba lejos, guardaba en mi corazón sus ojos grandes y expresivos. Extrañé muchas veces su compañía; lloré y también reí con sus hermosos recuerdos.

Me quedo con una vida llena de vivencias preciosas junto a él, y con tantos detalles llenos de amor con los que siempre me lo demostraba.

Doris, mi felicidad fue conocerte y verlo feliz contigo, como su esposa, compañera y amiga. Y lo más hermoso fue verlos felices junto a sus hijos, Leonardo y Leandro. Tu amor por él y tu entrega incondicional, siempre a su lado sin importar el lugar donde tuvieran que trasladarse por sus responsabilidades de trabajo, serán ahora una fuente de fortaleza. Junto a Leonardo y Leandro, encontrarás el valor necesario para seguir adelante y cuidarlos; ellos serán un consuelo incalculable.

Sin duda, recordar tu amor y tu dedicación será siempre un gran consuelo para ti.

Dear Primo,

In our family you became a beacon of excellence, you showed us what we could achieve. You are such an important part of our family and you filled us all with immense pride. You set the standard.

You're achievements and exploits are many, and you moved through the world with humility, kindness, and care.

As a boy, I would look up and see you far away, not because you were  unavailable to us, quite the opposite, you always took the time; but because you were blazing a path full of brilliance and resilience. As I grew older, I began to believe that I too could make something of myself, your example was blinding and true.

But regardless, you were first and foremost my 'Primo', like you were to so many of us. Full of love, life, laughter.

Your legacy lives on through your wife and children and the many lives you touched.

We miss you dearly.

A tribute to my dear friend and “primo”:

We met during our respective PhD studies at Surrey University. His reputation for his research and his loving interactions with others placed him a class above the rest. What a gentleman with such class. 

The Bible states: “The memory of the righteous is blessed” - Prov 10:7; Ruben you have left a positive and indelible imprint in the hearts of many. We commit you into the loving and eternal grip of our Heavenly Father. 

Your legacy will live on through your wife and children with support from those of us whose lives you have touched.

 It is with a very heavy heart that I write these words. Rubén was never just a cousin to us — he was truly like a brother, someone deeply woven into our lives.
 
 We shared so many meaningful moments together, moments that shaped us and that I will treasure and carry with me forever. I am endlessly proud of everything he achieved, but what speaks loudest of who he was is the beautiful, loving family he built — all of you are his greatest legacy.
 
 I will always hold close our childhood memories, his loving kindness towards us, the memories of our English sessions when he arrived in London, the laughter we shared, and our fun nights out and of course, his always loving advice to me. Those moments reflect his warmth, his humour, and the joy he brought to those around him.
 
 You are in my thoughts always, and I hope that the love and memories you shared with him bring some comfort in this difficult time. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.

I am devastated by the sudden loss of my dear friend Ruben. We met in 2001 in Guildford at the University of Surrey in the UK and from that moment he became an important part of my life. His kindness, his warmth, and the honesty of our friendship stayed with me through all these years.

His absence leaves a deep ache, but his memory will stay with me always.
My thoughts are with his family and all who loved him.
