We are jealous of the angels today, as it is they who get to share in the joyous company of one of the loveliest souls ever to roam the earth. Winona Joan Tevington, née Lindenberg, 90 years young, ascended to heaven on December 17, 2022, to join her beloved husband, Eugene Andrew “Gene” Tevington, and cherished son, Keith Michael Tevington. We know she will continue to watch and guard over her “other son,” Scott Arthur Tevington, who she treasured and who adored her in return.
When Nonie first graced the world with her presence on February 26, 1932, Herbert Hoover was president, the Empire State Building was only a year old, and a gallon of gasoline was just 18 cents. She was given the name Winona, which is an Anglicized form of the Dakota Indian descriptive term, Winúŋna, meaning “firstborn daughter.”
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the second child of Leo Zachary Lindenberg and Helen Lindenberg, née Noonan, sister to Donald (†), Phyllis (†) and Mary Ellen (who she called “Mare”). Mare remembers her as loving, meticulously neat, and a talented cook and baker, with a sharp mind and wit befitting of her fiery red hair. Gene fell in love with Nonie’s special brand of sweetness and spice in 1948 and, after proposing to her twice, finally convinced her to marry him in 1954 — a love affair that would span nearly a half century, ending only with Gene’s passing in 2001. Over the years, the Army took them to Japan, Germany and, El Paso, Texas, where they made many, many friends through the military, the Altar Society at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Roncalli and the Boys Scouts. Nonie also worked as a teacher’s assistant through the VIPs program at El Paso Independent School District. Gene’s job with the IRS eventually brought them to Houston, and they settled in Spring, where the family would lay their deepest roots. Here, Nonie was a “homemaker” in the most beautiful sense of the word, and she created a warm, welcoming home filled with love and laughter, while also working hard for such disparate organizations as Pepperidge Farms Thrift Store, Spring Independent School District, Pilgrims Cleaners, then DFS and Hudson News shops at Houston Intercontinental Airport, retiring when she was 75.
When the time came that you had to be computer proficient to do pretty much anything in life, about the time she turned 80, she became a wiz on the iPad — putting her 14-years-younger sister to shame. And it did not surprise anyone in the family when Nonie became a card sharp, which also meant socializing and gossiping with the ladies, lunch out on the town, and discussing the daily news and life events.
In addition to her parents, husband, son and two siblings, Nonie is preceded in death by her fur babies Cricket, Snowball, Homer, and Nicki; brother Donald Lindenberg, sister Phyllis Lindenberg Dunton Faugno, brothers-in-law Timothy Allen Haggerty, Loring “Bud” Dunton, Leo Faugno, and William “Bill” Tevington; and sister-in-law, Dita Tevington.
She is survived by her beloved and talented son and caregiver, Scott, who took such loving care of her always, but especially so in her final years; her sister, Mary E. Haggerty, to whom she was more mother than sister; nieces and nephews, Timi Haggerty-Munoz, Shane Haggerty, Brett Haggerty, Loring Dunton, Christopher Dunton, Beth Dunton-Izatt, Ronald Lindenberg, James Lindenberg, John Lindenberg, Andrew Tevington, Kevin Tevington, Brian Tevington, Barbara Tevington, Lawrence Tevington, Deborah Kealing, and Victoria Teegarden; and sister-in-law Mary Lindenberg. She also will be terribly missed by her precious and precocious miniature schnauzers, Chip and Dale. Nonie also counted herself truly blessed by the friendship of fellow card sharps Nancy, Marion, Wanda, Bonnie, Sally, Judy, and Carol; as well as Erving “Greg” Edwards, whose special set of talents and skills as an ICU critical care nurse were literally lifesaving in Nonie’s final days. The title of “life saver” was also granted to son Scott Tevington, niece-in-law Bridget Haggerty, nephew Brett Haggerty, great-nieces Darcie and Emery Haggerty, niece Timi Haggerty, and sister Mary Haggerty, as they cared for Nonie with great love and above-and-beyond medical care when Nonie’s condition was at its most critical.
A Proud American, wife of an Army veteran, and lifelong Catholic, Nonie was secure in her faith and the promise of everlasting life, and so our grief, filled with the darkest heartbreak, is also framed by the brightest light with the knowledge that we will be together with her again. The size of the loss is the size of the love.
