Edith was a long-time resident of Northeast Philadelphia. She was born on October 30, 1920 in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia to parents Frank Rabinowitz and Rose Rabinowitz. Edith graduated from Overbrook high school in Philadelphia. She went on to establish a career in the civil service working in Philadelphia Naval Yard’s procurement operations. Her strong work ethic and dedication to detail and perfection affectionately earned the 4’11” Edith the nickname of “the Admiral.” In her later years, she was an avid volunteer for City of Hope and volunteered for several election commissions.
True to her birth date, Edith was always up for creating first class mischief. She loved to socialize and go out with long-time friends Miriam and Natalie during which she enjoyed many a good party and vodka martinis. Edith was known for being a speed demon; driving her Toyota Avalon from Northeast Philly to Cherry Hill, NJ in record times to visit family. She also developed a reputation for pilfering her favorite chocolates from her granddaughters’ Halloween and Easter baskets.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Rose Rabinowitz, husband Morton (Buddy) Meltz, and sister Marion Silverbook.
She is survived by her children; Sandra B. Geers (husband Robert Geers) and Barry S. Meltz. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Rachelle D. Shadle (husband Steven Shadle) and Jennifer Harrington (husband Mike Harrington and their children Morgan and Colin).
A family Celebration of Life will occur at a later date where Edith will be remembered with great stories, good drink and a spectacular butterfly release.
Memorial contributions may be made to City of Hope.
