Friedel Baumann was born in a small town in southern Germany on April 12, 1930. Friedel immigrated to the United States in the 1950s. Friedel met Joe Helmlinger at a German club, the Cannstatter Volkfest Verein, on Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia. They were married on April 27, 1957.
Friedel lived most of her life in the Bustleton section of Northeast Philadelphia, before moving to Southampton in 2010.
While Joe worked at his barber shop in Feasterville, Friedel managed everything else on the home front. During her younger years, Friedel enjoyed ice skating, skiing, tennis, and bowling. She also enjoyed crocheting, singing in a German choir, and relaxing on the beach in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Friedel’s husband Joe passed away on May 23, 2018, after 61 years of marriage.
Friedel is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law; Steve and Cathy Helmlinger, Mike and Jennie Helmlinger, and her four grandchildren; Jessica, Stefan, Mitchell, and Sean.
