He was a long time resident of the Somerton area of Philadelphia, PA. Jerry was born 04 August, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA to George H. Newman and Joelle Kuser (nee Kennedy). He attended Temple University and was a member of ETA Chapter, Sigma Alpha Rho.
He served in the Army with STRATCOM EUROPA Engineering Command, North German Military District where he was translator between the U.S. Military and German subcontractors, earning him the Cold War Certificate and Medal.
Jerry then worked as an Electrical Design Supervisor and German translator with Catalytic Inc., and United Engineers. He worked for over 30 years with P2s Company under the Department of Energy as a Program Manager, assigned to five different Nuclear facilities and lastly for National Security Programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory in NM. He retired in 2014 after 52 years in engineering.
A student of German Colonial History and Genealogy, he published six books and ten articles in both German and English. His 1973 book, A Postal History of East Africa won him an International Large Silver Medal at the INTERPHIL76. The Federal Republic of Germany placed the book in the Bundespost Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He also published articles on Japanese Art Swords for the JSSUS, and German Naval Ships mail from WWI for the German Philatelic Society, where he served as President of Chapter 2 in Philadelphia, PA from 1972/1975.

As an avid Amateur Radio Operator since 1987, his Station N3GBN operated at the 1989 National Scouting Jamboree in VA. Over the years he made contacts with over 190 countries, including the International Space Station. His Amateur Radio Awards include: Worked all States; Worked all Continents; The DXCC Award and several foreign Scouting Radio Awards. His specialty was IOTA, the Islands On The Air program, where he had verified contacts with over 100 Islands.
Jerry was a Veteran Scouter of over 50 years and had been involved in the program since 1949 as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Explorer Scout and Sea Explorer. As an adult, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster at Congregation Shaare Shamayim, Skipper of SES “Defiant” and SSS “Polaris,” Commodore of the Philadelphia Council Sea Exploring Program, and Member at Large with Philadelphia Council BSA. He was Silver Beaver recipient, a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Society, and member of the Order of the Arrow.
He is survived by Ann Louise Newman (nee Pachuta), his wife of 59 years, his son, Dieter Eby Newman and Jana Desiderio. Siblings: Allen Kuser; Bonnie Eileen (Kuser) Carter; Douglas Edward Kuser; Wayne Jeffrey Kuser; Michelle Elizabeth (Kuser) Wunderlich; Jacqueline Stacey (Kuser) Saddington, Helene (Newman) Bachman, and Carol Anne (Newman) Rheinhardt.
