Longtime Bensalem and Philadelphia resident, Dr. Janice Lee Cranmer died July 13, 2021 with her family in Madison, Georgia. She was 81 years old. Janice was born on October 18, 1939 at Temple Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Anna Josephine (Thatcher) Cranmer and Jason Schoefield Cranmer. Her three siblings were Jean (Cranmer) Whipple, Jo Ann (Cranmer) Pinola (deceased) and John Jason Cranmer of Madison, GA.
Janice grew up in Philadelphia, PA where she graduated from Gratz High School as a member of the National Honor Society with the class of 1957. She completed nursing training at Episcopal Hospital’s Diploma program in 1960 and began her nursing career in obstetrics and the newborn nursery/neonatal intensive care. In her early career, she discovered her passion for teaching and improving clinical practice. Her vision for developing innovative approaches to person-centered care led her to pursue additional training, including a Bachelor’s in Education (Temple University, 1972), a Master’s in Nursing (University of Pennsylvania) and a Doctorate in Education (Temple, 1992).
She grew up in Philadelphia and attended Berachah Church. As a child, she committed her life to Jesus and her early life vision was to serve Christ as a nurse internationally. In high school, she taught children’s Sunday School at Berachah and in her later years hosted home Bible studies in Bensalem with Christian Life Center. After that she attended Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia and Davisville Church (South Hampton). She delighted in serving others with the skills and resources she had. Developing deep and meaningful relationships with friends and pets brought her great joy.
Over time, she directed her relationship skills and cross-cultural passions to equip nursing students in the greater Philadelphia area with life-long learning skills and person-centered care. She served as a faculty member at Hahnemann University and Immaculata University for decades. At Hahnemann, she led a diploma to BSN program and at Immaculata, she was Chair of the Department of Nursing where she created an innovative, holistic and modular training program for skilled nurses to earn their Bachelor’s degree while working.
