Born and raised in Jasper, AL, Crew was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also an avid participant in the Girl Scouts, earning numerous badges and spending many summers at Camp Coleman. After graduating high school, she attended Walker College and the University of Alabama where she focused her studies in English and History.
An adventurous spirit, Crew loved to travel and often made trips to Europe. Her sense of adventure led her to take a float plane ride over Denali in Alaska and a mule ride down the Grand Canyon—experiences she cherished.
Crew had a deep love for the arts, whether performing on stage, working behind the scenes, or simply enjoying a show. She was a frequent attendee of ballet, opera, concerts, and theater. Her love of life and all creatures will be greatly missed.
Her passion for books was equally profound. She loved writing and collecting and even did reading and editing for friends. She was an active member of both the Delaware Valley and National Sisters in Crime, often attending writing conventions.
Crew is survived by her sister, Marion Hampton Dubé (Douglas) of Derwood, MD; her brother, Maury John Hampton of Southaven, MS; her niece, Laura Ann Hampton Wester (Brett), and great-niece Claire Kathryn Wester of Panama City, FL. She is also survived by many cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jane Crew Hampton and Maury Maurice Hampton.
There will be a private celebration of her life at a later date. She wished to quote a friend of hers and ask all who knew her:
“In lieu of flowers, please enjoy your life today. It’s your greatest gift.”
