

Saramma Verghese, RN (affectionately known as Mummy and Gamma), age 92, peacefully went to be with the Lord on February 26th, 2026, at her home, in the arms of her son and with her daughter by her side. She was a long-time resident of Syracuse, New York, before moving to Philadelphia to support her son and daughter-in-law.
Saramma was born in Chengannur, Kerala, India, to T.V. Verghese and Annamma Verghese. She graduated from high school at age 17 and went on to complete her nursing degree at Kugler Hospital in Guntur, India, four years later. She began her nursing career at Bangalore ITI Hospital, Kundara Hospital, and Peerumedu Hospital before immigrating to the United States in 1974. In the U.S., she worked at a Jewish nursing home and at Plaza Long Term Care before joining the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, where she faithfully served until her retirement at age 62.
Saramma lived a humble, God-fearing life while raising her two children as a single mother. She excelled in her profession and was deeply loved by patients and colleagues, receiving the Outstanding Nursing Care Award at the VA. At home, she joyfully prepared elaborate meals for guests and warmly opened her home to family and friends. Her steadfast faith in Christ was the foundation and strength of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and most of her siblings. She is survived by her children, Sarah Wilfred, MS, RDN, and Stephen Wilfred, DDS (Eliza Wilfred, MD); her wonderful grandchildren, Matthew Wilfred, DDS; Nina Williams, MPH; Jonathan Williams, MD, MPH; Samantha Williams, MD; and Jacob Wilfred, AS; and her brother, Raju (Gracie); and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Viewing and Funeral Services which will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Philadelphia Brethren Assembly, 2722 Jenkintown Rd, Glenside, PA 19038.
