Alvin R. Waggoner

Alvin R. Waggoner, 96, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Huntington, passed away Friday evening, December 27, 2019 at Heritage Park in Fort Wayne. Al was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was a 59-year member of First Baptist Church in Huntington. He worked at Caswell-Runyan Company in Huntington and then Falstaff Brewing Co. in Fort Wayne, retiring after 33 years. He served as a board member for Falstaff Credit Union, now known as MidWest America Federal Credit Union. After his retirement, he worked at Scott’s in Fort Wayne and at Ace Hardware in Huntington, before retiring again at age 87. Al loved spending time with his family and was a generous provider for both his immediate and extended family. He enjoyed gardening and watching the Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts. His family and friends treasured him for his quiet strength and well-timed wit. To many family members, he was known affectionately and simply as “Pa”.

Al was born on January 21, 1923 in Amity, Arkansas, to Alvin J. and Bernice E. (Tucker) Waggoner. He was the oldest of six siblings.

He married H. Sue Gregory on October 25, 1941, in Delight, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on November 15, 2007.

Survivors include a son, Jim (Donna) Waggoner, of Mesa, Arizona; a daughter, Pamela (Ron) Covington, of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Darren (Carrie) Waggoner, Ryan (Michelle) Covington and Courtney (Jeremy) Todd; nine great-grandchildren, Felicia Harvey, Ryan Clark, Hailey Todd, Grace Covington, Lila Covington, Jacob Todd, Anna Waggoner, Allison Todd and William Covington; two great-great-grandchildren, Miles Harvey and Violet Harvey; and a sister, Sue (Garry) Carl, of Huntington.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Terri Sholl; two brothers, Richard Leon Waggoner and James Marland Brewer; and two sisters, Euna Faye Sutton and Wanda Dunn.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., immediately following visitation, with Pastor Randy Dubois officiating.

Interment will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Huntington County.
