Janice Irene Smith, 83, of Markle and formerly of Huntington passed away on Monday September 28, 2026 at Markle Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her honorary granddaughter, Crystal Arellano and the loving staff at Markle Rehab. She retired after a long and dedicated career at Huntington County Schools as a special educational teacher. She loved and cherished all of her students. She also made time for her love of crafting, sewing, quilting, and love of animals.
Janice was born on May 5, 1943, in Latrobe Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Emory W. and Betty (Pahel) Carver.
She was united in marriage to Darryl Smith. He preceded her in death on February 22, 2014.
Survivors include two loving daughters: Lisa (Jason) Harbuck of Huntington, and Mona (Tim) Dennie of Fort Wayne; her daughter in law: Debbie Smith; a brother: Emory L. (Sue) Craver of Fort Wayne; a sister: Jeanine Colby; seven grandchildren: Shannon Dennie, Jason (Miranda) Mills, Christina Snook, Joseph (Kelsey) Dryer, Emily (Lisa) Dryer, Stephanie (Garrett) Pape, Kayden Smith, and her honorary granddaughter Crystal Arellano; and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son: James Smith; and a brother: Martin Gene Craver.
A visitation will be held on Friday October 2, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, located at 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington IN 46750.
A Funeral service will be held on Friday October 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. immediately following the visitation at the Myers Funeral Huntington Chapel.
Interment will be at St. Peter's First Cemetery in Huntington.
