John was born on January 30, 1942, in Columbia City, IN, a son of the late Franklin Leonard Karst and Georgianna Castator.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie Dolby on July 17, 1965, in Columbia City. His wife preceded him in death on June 9, 2013.
Survivors include his son, John F. (Heather) Karst of Roanoke; stepdaughter, Tina Marie Strayer of Indianapolis; a sister: Sharon (LaVern) Fudge of Columbia City; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
John owned and operated a farm for many years and took great pride in working with his hands and providing for his family. He also worked in the foundry at International Harvester, later known as Navistar, until his retirement. John had a knack for fixing just about anything and could build nearly anything he put his mind to. He valued being a good neighbor and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him. He especially cherished being there for his children and grandchildren, taking pride in helping them whenever he could and being a dependable presence in their lives. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, resourcefulness, and willingness to help others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard A. Karst; his stepdaughter, Amy Weidler; his stepson, Ed Bragg; and his wife, Marjorie.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, located at 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
A graveside service will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Marion.
