Leslie "Les" Keith Chafin 72, of Huntington, passed away on Sunday June 14, 2026 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Les graduated from Fairview High School in Sherwood Ohio, lettering in football and baseball. He then attended Huntington College from 1972 to 1976, playing on both the baseball and soccer teams. Les worked early in his career as the Program Director for the Huntington YMCA, and at Schenkel's Dairy, prior to spending the last 26 years of his career at Elliott Insurance. Les loved all sports, but especially football and baseball, cheering for his beloved Detroit Tigers. He also supported the Huntington University men’s basketball team with fundraising initiatives for many years.
After valiantly battling cancer and the treatment side effects, Les passed peacefully surrounded by his beloved family. He was fun-loving, irreverent, genuine, and steady as a 100 year old oak, went fishing any time he could, and will be profoundly missed. He was the reliable bedrock upon which many stood for much of our lives. While not perfect by any stretch, he was always willing to help (despite his grumbles) or to offer the services of one of the many many folks he knew across the social spectrum. He was so generous and asked for no thanks or recognition for the many small kindnesses he did every day that made a quiet impact on others. He loved his family, both immediate and extended, so, so fiercely, and instilled the belief that family supported each other no matter how hard it could be. He was a devoted Poppaw to his 3 granddaughters and also loved his family dogs. He loved Jesus and loved his church, The Well, and his faith was constant to the end.
Les was born on March 4, 1954 in Matewan, West Virginia, a son of the late John W. and Flossie (Elliott) Chafin. He was united in marriage to Kris Miller on January 18, 1975 in Huntington. His wife survives in Huntington.
Additional survivors include two daughters: Noelle Chafin of Huntington, and Katie (Brian) Glasgow of Clayton North Carolina; three grandchildren: Lily Glasgow, Avery Glasgow, and Isabel Glasgow; and two brothers: John D. (Cheryl) Chafin of Farmer Ohio, and Mike (Kathy) Chafin of Girard Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law: Judy and Paul Nusbaum.
