Nancy L. Smith, 74 of Huntington passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Heritage Pointe of Huntington. Nancy and her two sisters and later with their younger brother growing up, sang in The Myers Trio at many churches, church camp and gospel concerts throughout western Ohio. The tradition of singing when the family got together continued throughout their adult lives. Nancy received her Bachelor’s degree from Huntington College in 1972 in Elementary Education and received her Master’s degree from Indiana University in 1976. She was an elementary teacher from 1972 – 2002. Her 30 year teaching career was at Central Elementary school in Huntington, teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Nancy was proud of raising an outstanding son whose family brings joy and pride. She enjoyed card making, stamping and quilting. She was active in Classroom Teachers’ Association and Indiana State Teachers’ Association. She promoted the need for school replacement that resulted in the Flint Springs Elementary school construction. She volunteered as a tutor with Youth Services Bureau and also served on the board and also volunteered at Huntington Red Cross. Nancy was active in College Park Church for more than 50 years. She sang in the choir and served as a Sunday school teacher, primary worship leader and vacation Bible school teacher. She was elected to local administrative board and served as lay delegate to denominational district and national conferences. She supported her husband’s career as college professor and administrator by attending or hosting numerous receptions and meetings. Nancy was born on January 5, 1946 in Stockport, Ohio, the daughter of J. William and Nancy H. (Paxton) Myers. She grew up in Cridersville, Ohio, where she attended K-12 school and graduated high school in 1964. Nancy attended Owosso College in Michigan for two years. She was united in marriage to Gerald D. Smith on August 19, 1967. Her husband survives. Additional survivors include a son: Michael (Jennifer) Smith of Huntington; two sisters: Martha (Paul) McCarter of Pinellas Park, FL; Lenora (James) Johns of San Antonio, TX; a brother: John (Carolyn) Myers of Helotes, TX; two grandsons: Joshua Smith, Caleb Smith and a granddaughter: Hannah Smith all of Huntington. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
