Albert Raymond Guiod of Marstons Mills, MA passed peacefully on February 23, 2024 in the company of family at the home of his daughter in Lewisburg, PA. He was a little over a month shy of this 95th birthday.
He was for 63 years the loving and adored husband of the late Mary Louise (ne McDonald) Guiod of Marstons Mills (originally from Dorchester, MA), and the cherished father of Joan Marie (Randy) Twining of Glen Arm, MD; Mark Allan (Suzanne) Guiod of Marstons Mills, MA and West Granby, CT; and Suzanne Elizabeth Guiod (Theo Schnaufer) of Rochester, NY; beloved Grandpere of Kristen Guiod of Alexandria, VA; Matthew (Katie) Guiod of Watertown, MA; and David Guiod of West Granby CT; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was the youngest of 14 children and 10 that survived to adulthood, pre-deceased by his brothers Joseph, Alfred, Raymond, and Daniel; and sisters Milicent, Judy, Mary, Violet, and Pauline. He also leaves behind life-long friend and business partner, Jim Morrill of Canton, MA.
He and his beloved wife Mary raised their three children in Dedham, MA.
Al was born April 9, 1929 in Dedham MA and attended school in Hyde Park, MA until 1945 when he left Hyde Park High School early to join the military at the tail end of World War II. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp as a Radio Technician from 1945 to 1948, then in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Radio Clerk from 1948 to 1953, and then in the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1953 to 1955. He obtained his High School Equivalency Diploma in 1969.
After the war, he worked with his father and brothers as a carpenter for Joseph Guiod & Sons General Contracting. In 1951 he became a mechanical assembler for General Control Co. in Brighton, MA; as his career progressed over the next two decades, he held supervisory and managerial positions at the Atomic Instrument Co. in Cambridge, MA, and Ionics, Inc. in Watertown, MA, eventually becoming Manager for Production and Quality Control at Solar Control Products Corporation in Newton, MA.
In 1976 he pursued a different career, going back to school at the Northeast Institute of Industrial Technology, earning his diploma in Air Conditioning and & Refrigeration Technology and becoming an HVAC Engineer. He was licensed by the State of Massachusetts as an Oil Burner Technician, a Master Piper Fitter, and a Hoisting Engineer. In 1977, he became the HVAC Engineer for the South Shore Plaza Mall in Braintree, MA until his retirement in 1997. He was honored as Employee of the Year in 1987 and was recognized for his significant contribution to South Shore Plaza’s 1994 Operation Overcoat Campaign which was just one example of his desire for giving back. Another was his volunteer service as a member of the South Shore Vocational Technical High School Program Advisory Committee from 2004 to 2014 in Hanover, MA.
But to Al, retirement was just a moniker for 401K advisors. In his “retirement” he became a shuttle driver for AVIS at Boston’s Logan Airport. After having their retirement home built on Cape Cod, Al was issued his Hackney License by the Barnstable Police Department and he drove for Dick’s Taxi Service for several years, enjoying the interesting people he encountered from all walks of life. In between all of this, he continued HVAC work with his dear friend Jim at Champion Refrigeration, and they had many vocational adventures together. In his final years, he worked as a Salesman for The Used Tool Store on Rt 28 in Hyannis right up to the ripe old age of 93.
Al enjoyed traveling with his wife Mary throughout the country and together they frequented favorite New England destinations in Newport, RI and Ogunquit, ME. They travelled as far as Bermuda, Arizona and even Alaska. But if his first love was his wife Mary and his three children, his second was unquestionably the links. Al loved golf and everything associated with it. He was a member of the USGA from 2004 to 2016 and held memberships at the Old Barnstable Fairgrounds and Holly Ridge Golf Clubs at various times. His last outing was at age 93.
Throughout his life Al was a devoted, loyal and much-loved patriarch of his branch of the Guiod family. His deadpan wit and collection of “Grandpere-isms” will live on with his children and grandchildren. He leaves a golden legacy of his love for his family, his unquestionably strong work ethic, and his love and loyalty to the country he served so honorably for 10 years. He is one of the few last members of what has been called The Greatest Generation, and his life is testament to that tribute. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
