August A. Tremer, 97, of Centerville, MA passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving daughters. He was the beloved husband of 66 years to the late Bernadette Helene (Booth) Tremer, and cherished father of seven children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
August was born in Woodbury, NJ and raised in Philadelphia by his late mother, Ruth Amelia (Schwartz) Tremer and her family.
In his youth, August was an excellent student, was a leader in school government and active in extracurricular activities. As a teenager, he loved spending summers at the Jersey shore, where he was a lifeguard. He had a beautiful singing voice and later sang in a barbershop quartet. He was involved in community theater throughout his life and even modeled for May’s Department Stores.
After graduating from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, August enlisted in the Navy at the end of World War II. The war ended, however, before he finished his aviation training at Union College. After his service, August continued his studies under the GI bill at Temple University, and received his Master’s Degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1953, August met the love of his life, Bernadette, at the Cadillac Show Bar in Philadelphia where they enjoyed big band music and dancing the jitterbug. Soon after, they married, honeymooned in Atlantic City and later became devoted parents to seven children.
In their early years, they lived in Denville, New Jersey, when August joined U.S. Steel as a Public Relations Manager in New York City on Broadway at Wall St. August was transferred by the company when the headquarters moved from New York to Cleveland, then to Pittsburgh, where the family settled in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, for six wonderful years, then Wexford, Pennsylvania, for 35 years.
In their retirement, in 2005, August and Bernadette moved to Centerville near their daughter Beth, son-in-law Tim and granddaughter, Katherine. They loved the town and made many friends as they walked throughout the village. They were avid patrons of the Centerville Library, and Historical Museum, and members of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
August had a great love of nature, children and animals. On walks, he enjoyed collecting rocks and seashells, often remarking “It’s a beautiful world”. August’s children describe him as kind, loving, sensitive, sentimental, funny, articulate, intellectual and a “deep thinker". Others always referred to him as “dignified”. He had a huge heart and always looked out for the “under dog”. He responded to the needs of others throughout his life, volunteered in the church and read to residents at Chip’s House.
After Bernadette passed away in 2019, August was lovingly cared for by his daughters Jane, Beth and Ann, and wonderful and faithful caregivers, Pam Van Dyk and more recently, Marilyn Wright.
In addition to his mother Ruth (1991) and wife Bernadette (2019), August is predeceased by his beloved daughter Sue (1971). He is survived by his loving children Mark, Ann, Beth, Jane, Paul and Clare, grandchildren Sara, Christian, Trevor, Katherine, Matthew, Jack, Luke and Theodore, and great grandsons Benjamin and Jayden.
“Gus” will be dearly missed by his family, friends and loyal canine companion, Gulliver.
Private memorial services will be held on Cape Cod and in Sewickley, PA.
